So, BMM's executive board (those low-lives hanging around in Skype) are now considering removing the ship identifier tags we have on our ships currently.

This choice has been given to the employees of our faction. Don't hesitate to post a reason behind your answer, and discuss the tag system further here.

Let us know your thoughts!

Edit: People outside BMM are welcome to post, but please do not vote.
Hmm I think we could do with getting rid of the [:E] and [E], but the [M] and [T] are useful for knowing which ship is a mining ship and which is hauler, so I'm being a bit indecisive.

Maybe change the naming system so that a Heg miner is named after towns (BMM-Chesterfield, BMM-Wickham, BMM-Durham) and the Haulers / Titanics are named after British Super Tankers (e.g. BMM-Adventure, BMM-Bulldog, BMM-Crown, BMM-Realm, BMM-Skill and BMM-Talent.)?

Just idea? :$
Friendly advice from a competitor: IMG| dropped those tags and noticed this drew less attention to our miners from the unlawful side. Seeing a few [M]s out there paints a bullseye on you ('specially for the folks with a [M] prefix). Seeing just a bunch of same-faction players gives the impression of a posse...

SO why you in our BMM thread! :D

Any comments about my idea regarding changing the names of the ships?
I have the same thought, drop the [E], [T] etc. Saying its confusing is not really a option as we from BMM would know what name belongs to wich ship.

So my vote is yes and stick to the BMM- tag only.
O iff someone has a better idea let us know.

This is always why I wanted to drop it too. I knew the moment I went out with that [M], someone was after me. Meta, but what're you going to do

Thanks for your advice, I was going to put a note in the first post that this thread's open to anyone, just didn't think anyone would see it:P
Use npc transport tags for tagging up transports, and come up with some for mining ships - that looks cool, as for me. For liners solely name could fit fine. I don't really see need to tag up escorts, but if you're really so keen on it, turn them into some codenames, like Delta-7, etc. Just turn them all, or such tagging will loose any sense.
ALL SHIPS SHOULD BE TAGGED AZ!

ALL AZ!

I strongly suggest that these extras get the boot, or some other system be configured.

First, as a former BMM member I found the suffix tags an easy way to tell the dacites, mafics, hegemons and transports apart...that was good as a new member because I could tell at a distance easily which ship to target to mine for.

This does, however, create the exact same response from those who would pirate or attack said vessels. I was often targeted on my [M] suffix because the pirates knew it was a hegemon, but generally ignored on the [:E] dacite or [E] mafic.

Now, were I not familiar with this system as a former member, I can assure you that those that regularly pirate or attack BMM are most likely also aware of it. If every [M] a pirate group encounters is a hegemon, and ever [:E] a dacite, (yes I'm using the old terms), it's pretty much a given that the enemy will learn the designations in time on their own. (There's a reason that NATO had classifications of Warsaw Pact ships and vehicles).

That said, no matter what convention you come up with, it will in time be learned by those that oppose the faction in-game, so changing only buys a relatively brief amount of time. If a group, for example, uses alpha for vhfs, beta for gunboats, gamma for cruisers, etc. it is a very brief time to learn the convention in-game and inRP. The convention that BMM uses is perfectly fine and uniform inRP and in-game, but it does make the ship classes instantly identifiable when they are in the far reaches of scanner range.

I'll take a guess and predict that because I suggest removing them Dart will instantly move that they be kept. :D The reality is that it doesn't matter whether they are kept or not. Ship names and types encountered will be noted and logged and entered into database for future reference, whether that be a spreadsheet or simply memory. The only difference is whether it is instant recognition or needs to be looked up before deciding to close in for the pirate attempt, or break off and select a different ship.

PS Someone in HC contact me so we can get some more activity in Dublin.

I like Jim solo's idea of having a naming convention, but a subtle one that only BMM knows.

For instance name haulers after english counties, and miners after english towns.

(Except not that specifically, because I said it now)
