[font=Arial]We take the Discovery community very seriously, so this is a public update about our faction’s operations over the past month. We not only welcome questions and constructive feedback, we request it. Thanks for reading.
HGL aims to provide Disco players, especially new ones, with an enjoyable and RP-structured faction in which to develop and fly RP-savvy trade or escort characters, as well as to provide a funding base for other characters if they so choose. We are working hard in multiple areas to make sure the faction contributes substantively to the Disco community.
Our goal is not merely to “balance” appropriate RP with exploration and enjoyable journeys, but to have a great time through creative use of RP. While we are not RP experts, we are very committed, and we are improving every day. Thanks to the friends who have advised and assisted us in this along the way.
As of this posting, HGL has 11 players assuming 14 character roles. Characters operate according to the following staff listing:

Highland-Gateway Position Openings
Our DTO and ADTO have done a tremendous job researching RP-appropriate, yet profitable, trade routes throughout Sirius. An initial list of these routes, along with suggested route combinations, is listed on our semi-private communications thread. Routes are based on the commodities HGL would logically ship, locations to which HGL would logically travel, and the companies with which HGL would logically do business, according to appropriate RP. Information on appropriate RP has been gathered from Disco histories, faction descriptions, news reports, and base rumors.
While we are committed to staying in line with routes developed in this manner, HGL also seeks additional RP-appropriate opportunities. For instance, as Molly autonomy came about, HGL immediately sought and was granted trade relations with the Union of Gold. We are now able to purchase gold in Dublin, with the cooperation of UoG members.
We have had a number of two- to four-vessel convoys (sometimes with additional guests) over the past weeks, and we’ve enjoyed very good camaraderie along the way.
Setting up our escort division has been something of a challenge. We have had some trouble locating and arranging RP-appropriate logistics for ships and equipments, but especially guns. While others have worked hard in starting this process, our hope is that the new DSO will be able to bring it to completion in a way that makes sense for our faction’s role in Disco, and also make our escorts effective.
Training is available with our ADSO as well as others hired in RP-appropriate circumstances to supplement.
While our rules of engagement are still in development, what we have tried to emphasize is, again, a healthy measure of RP. Our traders will try not to get pirated, and our escorts will defend them when at all possible, but we also recognize our relationship in Disco to the pirate factions, and good RP – even good conversation, if possible – is paramount.
We have recently established a Board of Directors for HGL, and have filled three of the five seats currently available. The responsibility of the BoD is to provide strategic vision and macro-level decision-making for the faction, as well as to contribute regular investments to the faction’s central account. Funds are used for faction-wide expenses, including subsidizing new employees as needed (i.e., when coworker funds are not quite sufficient). Since the employees pay nothing to the company, this is the faction’s primary source of income. The BoD is open to any employee, or any non-employee with an RP-appropriate rationale for joining and a desire to contribute time, thought, and funds.
HGL has become in a short time a group of players who enjoy each other’s company, and are very hospitable to new players, especially those new to Disco. This is part of our leadership’s vision for the faction, and we hope that our mutual support extends eventually outside the confines of the faction itself.
We look forward to more interaction with the rest of the Disco community, both in-game on in the forums. Please do not hesitate to call.
