Kyushu News Network: Blast Rocks Samura Industrial Zone. 500 Dead.

June 1st, 819

Early Friday morning at 03:23 AM local time, a massive explosion rocked the Fukuoka Industrial District on Planet Kyushu, killing an estimated five hundred civilians and leaving almost another two hundred missing. The explosion originated from the Gallic ship, the IDF Herriot, a Solar Engineering manufactured ME-UH type Vache transport, comparable to the modern Akegata in terms of size and hauling capacity. The ship originated from Planet Nevers in Gallia, and was supposedly carrying luxury goods.

The blast destroyed more than two thirds of the Samura owned Seinan Loading Docks and Warehouse Complex. The blast and the following fire caused massive damage to the surrounding infrastructure for several kilometers. Medical personnel and fire containment units arrived on the scene within minutes, but the sheer amount of damage to Seinan and the size of the fires left little hope at the time. Since the blast 248 people have been rescued from the ruins of Seinan. Damages are estimated to be in the hundreds of millions, and Seinan will likely have to be torn down and rebuilt from the ground up in the future.

Local hotel employee and witness to the disaster, Kazuya Anno, had this to say:
“I was working in the lobby then, helping an older man unload his luggage from the tram... then there was a blue flash and all the windows shattered... there was a massive fireball on the horizon where the shipyard was.”

The KSP have been reluctant to comment on the disaster, but assure the public that everything is being done to bring those responsible to justice.

Confidential sources inside the KSP have stated that original suspicion had fallen on the Blood Dragon terrorist cells, but communications to New Tokyo from New Paris suggest a terrorist cell originating from Gallia who have called themselves the Maquis.

SGT. Jacques Lalique of the Gallic Royal Police stated that:
“The Maquis are a ruthless organization which has never shown any remorse, they aggressively target any person or organization loyal to the Crown… this of course could extend to any groups our government deals with. I would not put it past those terrorists to target freelancers, miners, or other civilians in Sirius space. ”

Unconfirmed reports say that Maquis terrorists smuggled a warhead from a nova antimatter bomb onto the IDF Herriot while it was moored in the Burgundy System. The device traveled undetected from Gallia to Kusari, but due to the design of most nova warheads it is possible that the device was assembled en route to Kyushu, rather than being smuggled onboard the transport in a complete and more obvious manner. Adding to the troubling reports, there have been sightings of three crew members of the IDF Herriot leaving Seinan on one of the high speed trams earlier in the morning, minutes before the blast.

The KSP refuses to comment the possibility of Maquis terrorists free in the Samura controlled sectors of Kyushu.

Kyushu News Network: Rheinland takes over Honshu security. Issues on the border?

June 17th, 819

Today at 1:27 local time at the capital on New Tokyo, Chief of Staff Nagata Yuri signed a controversial treaty with the Federal Republic of Rheinland to allow their military forces and the Marinenachrichtendienst unrestricted access to the Honshu system in exchange for similar deployment of KNF and Kempeitai in Rheinland space.

Public Treaty Copy

Not only does it allow the Rheinland military to enforce Kusari law in Kusari space, but it also allows them to enforce Rheinland law in Kusari space, assuming the vessel they are interacting with came from Rheinland space. The treaty itself suggests that Rheinland criminals may be fleeing to Honshu, likely due to the redeployment of Rheinland military forces to the Liberty front and Honshu itself.

Unfortunately for the KNF side of the deal, their movement is extremely restricted in Rheinland space. The Frankfurt side of the Sigma 13 jumpgate is bordered on one side by the Westerwald, which the Kusari pilots are not to enter, and on the other side by an asteroid field which is known to harbor terrorists. This limits KNF forces to only the trade lane.

Takao Hiyashi of Samura questions whether this is a “cover-up for the KNF being unable to guard their own borders”. This could be true. Detective Takeshi Yoshida of the State Police reports a rise in Gallic Nox smuggled in from the Tau systems into Kusari, and now the entire Honshu border is under the control of Rheinlanders and the GMG. The ability for KNF to control their own borders without outside help is now in question.

Several politicians on Honshu are now worrying for their livelihood and the safety of their installations in space. Muroto Trade Center is a Liberty owned base operated by the LTS, a division of Interspace Commerce. Past Rheinland interactions with Interspace have been less than friendly, and led to the incident with Bonn station which is still unresolved to this day. Other people are concerned that the Rheinlanders have been allowed into Honshu in order to provoke the GMG into more armed conflict. Each group is now effectively in control of an exit of Honshu.
