I will agree that not allowing swearing has nothing to do regarding age restrictions or other such nonsense. Instead the rule is there to promote the mental well-being of the community. However if you get sanctioned for calling someone a mong IRP, you know a certain limit as to what counts as offensive/distasteful is reached. This pretty sums up my thoughts on this. I understand that for some people it seems ridiculous to not be allowed to swear but I feel like it keeps the community 'clean'. There's always a lot of oorp hate going on in Disco, we all know that. There's got to be something to prevent everything becoming one giant mess. And the line between inRP and ooRP is thin. Now you may agree with that, or disagree with that. But even if you disagree, I also don't think the rule really causes any trouble. I swear a lot in real life, sometimes perhaps even rather excessively. Yet not doing so on the forums and in-game has never bothered me at all. And I can inRP insult people really easily without resorting to profanity. In fact I feel like my inRP insults are often a lot more refined as I got to actually think of something insulting that applies to the other's character rather than using a few words all the time that can apply to any situation. As for the words that are not really all that bad. I guess there could be a more relaxed attitude to that. However, I personally would still prefer to act against them in cases where they are used to personally insult someone. For me that's the main point behind many of the community rules: to prevent people from flaming, raging, mudslinging and attacking each other. So for mild words I'd say, more attention to the context could be given. edit: these are my personal thoughts btw. Just talking here as a member, not as a moderator. RE: Swearing | Questions/Thoughs about it and RP - Unlucky_Soul - 01-09-2016 In the end it's just a game not a !@#$ (insert male appendage) No need to take it so hard RE: Swearing | Questions/Thoughs about it and RP - pillow - 01-09-2016 (01-09-2016, 07:49 PM)Unlucky_Soul Wrote: In the end it's just a game not a !@#$ (insert male appendage) too bad that everyone does call someone a mong inRP and you get sanctioned most likely about to be assassinated probably cursed too RE: Swearing | Questions/Thoughs about it and RP - Kauket - 01-09-2016 (01-09-2016, 07:43 PM)TheJarl Wrote: There's always a lot of oorp hate going on in Disco,Hence why there's a rule for no abuse/insulting? Duh? As long as it's allowed in an RP scene and stories, I don't care if it's not allowed OORPly. RE: Swearing | Questions/Thoughs about it and RP - The Savage - 01-09-2016 I think status quo is, so far, the most healthy approach at the moment. Myself, I always use "effing" in order to not to use "F" word for example. But then, Nyx also got a point. It shouldn't be disallowed or censored in stories, provided warning about bad language should be given prior such a thing. For me, if swearing is used in system local chat - that is okay. But when someone PMs me insults (provided it's not a friendly chat in which we swear, like on group chat), that's the ooRP hate. Yes, I agree that swearing should not be reglemented so harshly, but instead of just flaming people who disagree with you, you should evaluate the points of the opposing side instead of just dismissing their arguments for the sake of a good rage. I'd disagree with both of you. As aforementioned adults, surely we can conduct ourselves on a video game without having to reduce ourselves to the lowest common denominator of the English language. There are plenty of interesting, less offensive ways to express oneself. If you find that too difficult, just go spend some time on skype to get your fill. RE: Swearing | Questions/Thoughs about it and RP - Kauket - 01-09-2016 I mean, using swear words is a great way to convey a character, like someone of a 'gangster origin' would be using more gritty words rather than sophisicated words. Or to convey extreme anger in a character that's usually quiet and peaceful, showing the contrast in their nature. RE: Swearing | Questions/Thoughs about it and RP - Char Aznable - 01-09-2016 I understand that, and while that certainly has some merit ooRPly, I just don't understand why a lowly pirate who doesn't care about the law, drinks whiskey for breakfast and for a living shoots the guts out of someone should care about what he says. Cursing is part of RP, that's what I am saying. Don't try to get on some moral high ground by claiming that you do not 'need to swear' or whatever, just try to understand the logic behind Karsts (and by extension, my) reasoning. |
