For unknown reasons, it has been decided that this community needs to be rated "E" (if you ignore the violence, drug use, slavery etc.), so a kindergarden-level zero tolerance policy even for mild swearing is used.

I disagree with this, I feel this is belittling and mocking of a community composed of teens and adults, and it makes me take the rules and staff less seriously.
I'm pretty certain the majority of the community agrees, but that's been the case for years and nothing has ever changed.

So, good luck I guess.

I couldn't have worded it any better. Thank you Karst.

@"FluffReborn" People will harass and insult you by other means if it is forbidden to insult you ingame so I'd rather have that.

For once I actually agree with @nOmnomnOm (I never thought that day would come) that this might need some clearing. Whenever I used a swear word either ingame or on the forums I was shortly shocked, only then realizing that swearing on discovery is so very discouraged.

@jammi pointed out in memes that "Star Wars" did not include any elements of profanity. True, but comparing Star Wars to Freelancer is like comparing Lord of the Rings to the Witcher. The Witcher (both games and novels), not sure about what English version, is full of racism, racial/class derogation and a lot, a lot of swears and full range of deragotary terms for non-humans or low-class people. But, that's because it's dark fantasy.

And, as I pointed out in my meme, we have slavery, drug dealing, drug addiction, police brutality, war crimes, genocide, killing civilians, terrorism, xenophobia and overall racism - all within roleplay universe. This alone would make Discovery a +18 rating game, if not even having M rating.

mong
mʌŋ/
nounAustralian/NZinformal
noun: mong; plural noun: mongs
a mongrel.

MONG Definition / MONG Means
The definition of MONG is "Complete idiot"

The Meaning of MONG
MONG means "Complete idiot"

Remind me again how this is bad? It's used frequently in UK, along with twat, twit, bollocks, baffoon, arse, prat and wally. These are words you'd casually in the streets.

Jesus.

Personally, I think it should only be disallowed if it's used oorply or quoting an oorp context. I don't usually bother with 'swear reporting' as it's just redundant.

Someone said a word on the internet!!

Boo.

Hoo.

Children of under 13 aren't 'generally' supposed to be on the internet. Get over it.

When you get sweared at ingame, it is hard NOT to take it oorply. I will agree that not allowing swearing has nothing to do regarding age restrictions or other such nonsense. Instead the rule is there to promote the mental well-being of the community. However if you get sanctioned for calling someone a mong IRP, you know a certain limit as to what counts as offensive/distasteful is reached.

I think it should only bar the extremes. Not the minorities, such as that.

That is the reason Witcher has another rating than LOTR. Probably just handle it that way that this game plays a 1000+ years in future and one thing humanity has got rid off is swearing. Big Grin

I mean this community has worked without swearing a couple years. Don't you think changing this wouldn't be odd even in the RP environment?

I think the no-swearing rule makes Discovery as a whole much more tasteful. Whether it is iRP or not, some people probably don't swear words popping up on their screen. There are plenty of words in the English language to use as insults iRP creatively, keeping out the ones that are used in real life to attack people probably is for the best.

Well, if we are speaking about books, they do not have age rating for what I know. (Except for manga and comic books here, in Poland.)

This I agree. However, we shouldn't go into extremes.

We have two groups of "bad" words in Poland, brutalisms and actual swearing. For my logic, mong, which is mongrel, falls under brutalisms. Isn't "mong" the same level as "brat"?

Also fun fact: in group chat in game you can swear all you want. Provided that everyone is Ok with it (and no one reports you).
