Anyone that goes to the front page of the DUSA website sees that they would like to have about $60 in donations each month to help keep them going.

Guys, that's not a huge amount, when it's spread around amongst the hundreds of players. Would you consider donating $10 a year to keeping things updated and active? That's the whole point - we're not going to make this into a 'You must pay to play' server. Won't happen. Donations, however, are nice to be able to get new equipment and keep things going - we do the rest of this stuff for free.

(And as has been noted - when ONE person is willing to pay $60 per month to play WoW...)

As for location - there's never going to be one specific prime location. For those of us in the US, a ping of 200 to Europe is what we get a lot of the time, and vice-versa for you guys. Then the people in Anzlag territory see 400 - 600 pings - yet they still play the game.

Bah, I got banned from their forums after I boasted that the UK server could reach 200 players when the USA server would probably crash at 120 or something.:P
Anyway, we're heading ?95 each month... Josh, amirite? :-\

' Wrote:$5/$10 ain't that much... I spend $5.36 on Red Bull on Mondays and that's only for one day, $10 for... forever is nothing.
Look, I dont play EVE because (AND SOLELY BECAUSE) its pay to play. This game isnt worth me getting headaches and getting involved with so much and on top of that paying ever 5-10$ a month is ridiculous. And dont say a "One-Time Fee" because it dont work like that.

If you put a pay to play in effect, I'll just leave for eve and I bet alot of others will too.

Oh, and this is a little over my second year (About 2 1/2 years) being here. I aided in the construction and was the founder of the Mandalorians, which are rather large here now. I've made suggestions, I worked on textures, I'd liek to think I'm definitely rooted in this community. When people (I think it was 8) notice me posting (Not a "I'm Back", but just a regular post) within 10 minutes and greet me back, that says something.

Pay to Play will kill this. I know a buddy who has a good connection, he has a clean record here (He joined the same time I did) and he's considering to put in his request to host it, whether its temporary or not. If he can accept, he has strong security and is very savy with defending against hackers. Best part is he covers the server maintenence himself and I dont believe he works off donations.

His current server is a dual core clocked to 3.6 GHZ per core. He says he has a small business connection, 3G. If all checks out and the admins approve, he may be a new host. Or it could all catostrophically fail and we die as a community.

EDIT Also he has a small hard drive dedicated to RAM (via applications and such) so he has like 10 gigs of ram off board. Memory isnt a issue on his pc, his server is definitely up to snuff. I just need to convince him to put in a app so we can get back on discovery >.<

I'll confirm what Cannon just said.

We won't charge for playing, it's not going to happen. First of all, it's illegal, even if we wanted to. Second, we don't want to. We have players from varied countries, of varied age and income. I perfectly understand that for many of our players even small amounts of cash are hard to spare.

If we will be in financial difficulty, we may ask for additional donations. And on a purely volunteer basis. And we are also not going to provide any in-game benefits for those who donate.

Disco runs on donations for quite some time

Quoting from here: http://discoverygc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4540

Quote:Now some financial stuff...

Total initial costs: 522USD (10960CZK)
Used donation amount: 522USD
Status: Initial costs covered!

Total upgrade costs: 704USD (14495CZK)
Used donation amount: 704USD
Status: Upgrade costs covered!

Total unused donation amount: 1032USD

So no real change in any way actually.

EDIT: From the above numbers some 1900 USD was donated between November 2007 and now. (so in 2 years)

And all in all, if you all read these, uhh, 32-33 pages of this thread, everyone can notice one big thing...
Everyone is worried, everyone is concerned..

But Discovery will go on!

Hey, Black Hat, chew on this! And i won't forget the garlic.

P.S.: Sign me up for the donations.

Aye the only snag with me donating or i would have done by now. I do NOT do currency transactions over the internet. All i ever seem to hear is horror stories about the whole thing so i am not even going to attempt it. Even though i know it would probably go without a snag...

We had worse.

When Wolfie stopped hosting - THAT was a crisis.

Right, if donations are needed, I raise my hand wit money for the server.
