We got our independence by asking nicely. ;) I agree, this was ultimatlely how we gained our flag in the early 60's it was done diplomaticaly. The closest we have for diplomacy on Discovery FL are these forums. They would only be considered unlawful because of the Houses in current power do not wish to give the Canadians independance. This part is not authentic with real history but works for game mechanics. If they are farmers trying gain freedom and sovereignty, Than I think farmers are fine. FL has many "unlawful" factions that are cicilian labrours who became digruntled with the current powers that be. But like I said in the last reply, sorry Canadians if my idea reduces national pride a little. :$ Canadian Systems - AdamantineFist - 07-07-2008 ' Wrote:I vote Canada should be their own house and all houses are hostile to them.:dry:Yeah, so we'll team up with Switzerland and pwn all you Brits and Americans. The current nations on Earth (off the top of my head, US, UK, Saudi Arabia, France, all major players, aren't democratic), the nations represented in FL (going by strictly known data, two are from constitutional monarchies and three are from constitutional republics, not a democracy in sight) or by the governments in FL themselves (Liberty, if anything like it's forebear, is a republic, not a democracy, Bretonia is a constitional republic, Kusari an empire and Rheinland a fascist theocracy, no democracies)?Uh... a republic is merely a form of government in which there is no monarch, sooo... Britain is not a constitutional republic. Also, a democracy merely refers to a system of government where the general body of the population has power to elect its leaders and representatives in the government. Bretonia is a constitutional monarchy, Liberty is some sort of republic (and, at the same time a democratic state), and you are correct on the other two. Or maybe we should just name one Michigan with a big shipyard in the southeast and nothing in the northern half aside from a populated tourist station near the halfway point and several Jump Holes scattered throughout that go to Canada? I think that's just about an accurate description of this place. Darned Uppers have nothing to contribute to Michigan. :P Canadian Systems - Praetyre - 07-08-2008 ' Wrote:Uh... a republic is merely a form of government in which there is no monarch, sooo... Republics typically have constitutions, which limits the ability of the government to do certain things. E.g., Nation A is a representative democracy, and 51% of the political representatives vote to, say, institute witch burnings. Nation B is a republic, and the constitution protects freedom of religion and thus, no witch burnings. In essence, placing the rule of law/constitution above direct/representative majority will. Britain is closer to a democracy, given the "parliamentary omnipotence paradox" and all. But America's founding fathers, at least, certain weren't pro-democracy. Canadian Systems - Praetyre - 07-08-2008 ' Wrote:"Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the rest." Seems off topic, but: it depends how you define "best". Most economically efficient, economically successful, able to eliminate poverty or war, lack of corruption, efficiency in government, respect to human rights.. best is a highly subjective term for any political system, and hey, the world's only superpower ain't a democracy. Nor was the CCCP, Napoleonic France, the Roman Empire, Roman Republic, Achaeminid Persia, Egypt or Sumer. Canadian Systems - Xing - 07-08-2008 but, what WAS/IS a democracy then? Canadian Systems - Dieter Schprokets - 07-08-2008 ' Wrote:but, what WAS/IS a democracy then? Ancient Athens and ALL forms of government are bad. Republican democracy the least so. And I don't mean the Republican party, but the republican form of government. Till it goes empire, that is. Canadian Systems - Marburg - 07-08-2008 ' Wrote:but, what WAS/IS a democracy then?[hijack] In the dictionary definition, democracy "is government by the people in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system." In the phrase of Abraham Lincoln, democracy is a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people." People in this country (especially the politians) like to throw that word around alot, but America is not a democracy it's a republic. Now, if we dump the electoral college, we might get around to that democracy thing. The Electoral College is the body of representatives which formally elects the President and Vice President of the United States. Rather than directly voting for the President and Vice President, U.S. citizens cast votes for electoral college representatives, known as electors. While electors are theoretically free to vote for the candidate of their choice, in practice they pledge to vote for specific candidates. So, A republic is a state or country that is not led by a hereditary monarch but in which the people (or at least a part of its people) have impact on its government. The word originates from the Latin term res publica which translates as "public thing" or "public matter". There never really has been a true democracy simply because a true, total democracy cannot really function above the level of a country village. If everyone had a complete and total say in every single little thing, nothing would ever get done. Therefore, most democracies that we think of are, at best, representative democracies. |
