Mercanary's... - Saigo.Watanabe - 10-06-2008

Just a little question? Is there going to be a mercanary iff in the new mod? or are we going to have to try keeping no iff?

Mercanary's... - Boss - 10-06-2008

Most mercs I know (play as, have seen) use the IFF of their employer. (It's a pain, yes.)

Short answer: No clue.

heeh, well i dont want to have only one employer, im a traveler y'know?:P

Mercenaries will most likely not be getting their own IFF, however for the Canary faction I cannot rightly say.

Freelancer IFF is about as close to a generic Merc IFF as you can get. A pain to get, but I think I heard it'll be easier in the next update. Or a Zoner tag might work for you.

To be honest, I use no tag whatsoever. Its rather easy to mantain once you get most of sirus neutral.(can be done with few bribes, and mission here and there) After that, dont shoot npcs and you are fine.

Mercanary's... - Orin - 10-06-2008

Yeah, Bjorn's advice is best.

Having no IFF makes it a lot easier to drift up next to your quandry, exchage a few words, and blow him to dust. No IFF is the way to go unless your Merc has a set contract.

I'm still holding my position that freelancer ID and mercenary ID should be merged. Maybe even the Trader ID.

Would be nice to have generic IFF's to match our generic ID's ... such as Pirate IFF, Mercenary IFF, etc. Then we can get these self-righteous folk who think a generic has to have an IFF associated with someone to sit down and color. Oh yeah ... a Smuggler IFF and Trader IFF ... why not.

But then again ... I'd actually advocate getting rid of the IFF's altogether. Here's why ... it'll force people to scan to determine whether they are friend or foe. Right now we've got people shouting 15k away, "Rogue spotted ... engaging." And before they bother to scan to determine what you are they've got you all tied up with vile hatred for something they assume you are and guns ablaze. Then ... mid fight ... they scan you and say, "oops ... you're not a Rogue ... sorry ... carry on Junker."

That or you end up with people screaming in OOC, "// dude ... your ID and IFF don't match ... snap" and then we get trial by forum or force the admins to sanction the guy.

If we totally get rid of the IFF's we have one less thing to worry about being OORP ... one less thing for people to go OOC in system chat about. There will be no confusion as to who and what you are. If your ID says Liberty Rogue ... then you're Liberty Rogue. There's already a rule that states this ... but now we can reduce the number of lawyers running around.

Getting rid of IFF would be a very bad thing, can you imagine the chaos in a big fight where the members weren't in factions? No easy way tell friend from foe.

I have a better idea, make it so your ID determines you IFF. Generic IDs result in no IFF
