Bretonia's Political System and Parties - SpaceTime - 06-25-2015 At the request of people who wish to involve more into Bretonian politics RP, I am writing a short guide about Bretonia's Political System and Parties. As you may have noticed there has been a recent surge towards this kind of roleplay and it is my hope that it will continue.
This is not my creation, I have only worked on the development of two parties. This is more of a collective effort established by many players in the past which I would like to thank and also regret that their work does not receive the proper attention from the community: Dab, jammi, Wellingtons, DarthBindo, Turkish, Slavik, FallenKnight, Slainte, Rubber_Duck, Linkus, Echo 7-7, Unseelie, Marcus
Quote:These are the main political bodies of Bretonia: De facto, the players who made up the Bretonian Government also made up the War Cabinet. They also were responsible to roleplay the Royal Family if and whenever it was deemed preferrable and necessary. In addition, the War Cabinet made most of the decisions that came across. InRPly however, the government of Bretonia is currently a massive coalition of the Royalist and Federalist Parties. Subsequently the Parliament oorply did not have much power but it still served both as a roleplay platform in order to discuss and vote on subjects more general and important to Bretonia as a whole. Such as Bills. Royalist Party
One of the two main parties of Bretonia. As the name suggests, it is mainly in favor of the royalty and nobility and a strong House of Lords. They support that key corporations of Bretonia should remain under controlling interest by the state (the kingdom being the #1 shareholder) and promote government intervention in the market process. Prior to the war it supported an expansionist agenda which led to war with the Kusari Empire for the control of the Taus. Despite their views on commerce, they have frequently employed policies which deepened the stratification of the Bretonian society. OORP player pool: BAF, BPA, Bowex, BMM, Planetform The rivaling main party of Bretonia. Unlike the Royalist Party, Federalists wish to suppress the power of nobility and royalty. They support free market policies but also believe in a welfare state which curbs the unequalities between the different social classes. They support that expansion can be achieved peacefully and through trade agreements and during war time they are firmly against the influence of the military into politics. Once Gallia entered the war against Bretonia the Royalists who until then enjoyed a fragile majority, entered a coalition government with the Federalists because of the dire situations that Bretonia was involved in. OORP player pool: IMG, Gateway, Interspace Commerce, Cryer Green Party
The Green Party is the political arm of the movement while the Green Front are the activists, fundraisers and lobbyists. The two are separate entities because of the negative reputation that the Front sometimes attracts. The Green Party's performance in the elections historically dictated which and if the Royals or the Feds would enjoy a majority or not. Ever since the war with the Kusari, its influence has plummeted greatly. Its political rivals regularly accuse the party of having strong links with the Gaian terrorists, something which is not entirely fictitious. OORP player pool: Gaians Nationalist Party
For most of its history the Nationalist Party has struggled to get into Parliament. Consisting of a number of regional groups from across Bretonia, the party has often had trouble presenting a coherent front that is relevant throughout the House. Their situation changed with the Tau War, when their jingoist populism struck a chord with the primarily lower class population of Leeds; in this respect, they were inadvertently assisted by the incumbent government's propaganda campaigns. The Nationalists are highly reliant on confrontational politics, tub thumping and rabble rousing to enflame the public and garner votes from controversy. They support a state-controlled economy but campaign against the upper classes, such as the nobility and royalty of Bretonia. OORP player pool: Tiny minority of all Bretonian factions RE: Bretonia's Political System and Parties - SpaceTime - 06-25-2015 Didn't get @jammi to review-proofread the post yet, though considering that I didn't get into details, it may not be necessary afterall. RE: Bretonia's Political System and Parties - Highland Laddie - 06-25-2015 I would like to see this NOT turn into an RP means to display bitterness or oorp anger at decisions made by other Bretonian players or faction leaders. RE: Bretonia's Political System and Parties - Fluffyball - 06-25-2015 I wonder if there could be Separatist or Isolationist Party though. OORP player pool: Mollys. What exact role does Queen Carina have, in the first place? If she has little to no power, she's just a puppet in the Parliment's hands. If she can block every possible thing made by the Parliment on the other hand, that's not the Constitutional Monarchy. The latter is the reason why King/Queen of England do not have any real power. RE: Bretonia's Political System and Parties - SpaceTime - 06-25-2015 I would like to clarify that this is not a writeup of a faction or how things will work in Bretonia. This is more of a tutorial for players who wish to deepen their knowledge on the inRP government of Bretonia and perhaps are interested to start some political RP. Fortunately that was never the case and hopefully it will never be. (06-25-2015, 08:31 PM)Fluffyball Wrote: I wonder if there could be Separatist or Isolationist Party though. Well, the problem is the lore behind such thing. The Molly official factions have long roleplayed a different ethnical population, which however it is totally inaccurate. They are simply ex-BMM miners. (06-25-2015, 08:31 PM)Fluffyball Wrote: What exact role does Queen Carina have, in the first place? I'd let this to be answered by Jamie. It's clearly his area. RE: Bretonia's Political System and Parties - TheSauron - 06-25-2015 * TheSauron waves Green Front's banner. This post clears up a lot of things, nice to finaly somewhat understand what is going on in Bret Government. Ask and ye shall receive. Constitutional monarchy doesn't mean the monarch has no powers. That's often the case in modern constitutional monarchies, because the idea of a monarch actually doing things is archaic in the extreme and doesn't mesh particularly well with current democratic ideals. Frankly, doing it any other way would be embarrassing on an international level, when dealing with other 1st world democracies. (un)Fortunately, Bretonia isn't the modern world and has a vastly more powerful Queen than the one the UK is used to. All constitutional monarchy means is that the monarch's powers are clearly codified in an immutable fashion (whether that be through an actual constitution or merely by legislation and treaties as with the real UK), meaning they can't make things up as they go along, i.e. absolute monarchy. In Bretonia, the Queen has fairly far ranging powers, most of which are laid out in the document I linked to. RE: Bretonia's Political System and Parties - Marcus - 06-26-2015 (06-25-2015, 09:36 PM)SpaceTime Wrote: Well, the problem is the lore behind such thing. They are simply ex-BMM miners. The Mollys are both actually, they are ex-BMM miners and a ethnically different population (I.e Basically lots of Irishmen or other people British related people who you can't understand). General lore behind them is that their particular ethic were considered to be the lowest class of citizen who were forced to take what work they could. BMM used them as a cheap replaceable labor source where they could save costs by not having to worry about things such as decent wages and safe working conditions. After a series of worker accidents this lead to the workers revolting to become the Mollys, bringing their families along with them. The Mollys actually have a decent civilian population which was RPed out further by a previous Molly faction as living on Cork before it's bombardment and now live on the various stations in Londonderry. The goverment document you linked has the Molly's party listed under the Independence Party. Worth including and no subject to being of a particular ethic as it's simply RPed by MPs who are sympathetic to the Molly cause, and not (legally proven) Mollys themselves. RE: Bretonia's Political System and Parties - jammi - 06-26-2015 To be honest, Mollys being a separate ethnic group is pretty nonsensical. 820 years of being Bretonian plus however many centuries away from Earth on the outer belt of Sol would have completely destroyed the English/Welsh/Irish/Scottish identity. All that'd be left is various new regional subtypes of Bretonian. The Irish/Celtic backstory was simply something the Molly factions whipped up to excuse using Irish accents in a system called Dublin. The desire for space-IRA must be strong for many, but it's also kinda low hanging fruit. Apt comparison: I don't identify as Saxon, but I've probably got Saxon ancestors from ye olde 1,000 year ago UK. The Saxons don't exist as an ethnicity any more, because in the intervening centuries they were superseded by new cultural identities as populations moved around and new groups replaced them. RE: Bretonia's Political System and Parties - Marcus - 06-26-2015 The Molly political interests for an Independence Party would be very well in line with their RP as the Mollys are terrorists fighting to claim what, they, believe to be theirs. While most Mollys players play purely from a lets-pirate-people standpoint with hints of "Dublin's ours, yeeeah!" the Mollys aren't pirates by choice, that's what they do on the side in order to survive and get revenge on BMM. The Mollys are freedom fighters (i.e terrorists by goverment standards) who have a cause they're fighting for, not just for their personnel profit as then generic pirate would. As such they are quite likely to gain political sympathizers who likewise believe in their cause. The 'IRA' mentality is something that is actually downplayed more by the Molly factions then what it was originally. The original freelancer rumors and news make frequent references to a Molly plot to steal MOX or other toxic material and detonate a bomb in the atmosphere of New London, poisoning the planet. There's also mention of an assassination of a BMM Executive by Mollys, who was killed by a pick axe. The Molly's "Infamous and gruesome calling card", a piece of fools gold that was left at the scene, suggests that this isn't an isolated incident. Just like the Gaians are not your average pirate causing trouble, who's cause for a environmentally secure universe being expressed through the the Green Party, the Molly cause for a free Dublin is expressed through the Independence party. As Jammi said the ethic part for political parties shouldn't be relevant. Although the original freelancer rumors, news and character's frequently reference Irish names, as well as several other hints to the area such as having them fight over 'Dublin'. The Discovery factions have merely extended that foundation in order to enhance their unique brand of RP. While I doubt the entire Irish culture survives if they were separated from the rest of the Bretonian population by social constraints then it might not have been corrupted to the same extent. Regardless the Irish background is something that is now very heavily integrated into the Molly lore by years of faction effort, much like most of Discovery's factions. The accent makes the Mollys one of the more different factions, and far more fun to type out. |
