Introduction

The Federalist Party is currently the second largest and powerful political party within Bretonia. Even though it used to have another form and significantly different ideology, it is still considered as one of the oldest political parties in Bretonia, along with the Royalist Party.

After the Gallic invasion on Bretonia it was obvious that the majority party of Bretonia, the Royalists, did not have the power to handle the war effort on their own. Therefore after intense negotiations, the Royalist and Federalist Party created a coalition government in the eve of 819 A.S.

Consisting of more than 3/4 of the Bretonian Parliament, the coalition government may look formidable in numbers, yet the relations between Royalists and Federalists are far from warm and fierce arguments are common behind the scenes.

Ideology

The best way to describe the Federalist's party ideology is with 3 words; Parliamentary, Liberal, Progressive:

❋ We support a Constitution where the Parliament and government have significantly bigger powers and the Monarch remains as the head of the state however in a purely cosmetic role. Obviously the same applies to members of the nobility or citizens with titles, therefore we also support a House of Lords with severely limited power.

❋ Our economic policies are best described as Social Liberalism. That is because we encourage open market policies where the public sector is very limited, however the state maintains a supervisory role over the market. Furthermore, we support the fair distribution of wealth within Bretonian society and discourage the concentration of wealth with the few.

❋ We are Progressive because we were always strong proponents of an evolved society which should follow and adopt in the challenges of every era. We are also anti-imperialist by opposing the military expansion of Bretonia in the Taus and other regions as well. We therefore also oppose the involvement and influence of active military officers of the Bretonian Armed Forces in Bretonian politics.

History

Planet Leeds is widely considered by historians as the reason that Prince Harry XXI was deposed and a constitutional monarchy was established. Throughout the 5th century the planet contained a large number of political unions and small political parties of various ideologies which were fueled by the planet's extensive economic growth in its industrial sector. Eventually many smaller political parties were united in a single body at April 24th 513 A.S. This new significant player in the Bretonian political scene was called the Fabian Alliance.

The following decades the Fabian Alliance grew mainly with a central-left, worker-friendly agenda and eventually managed to create a minority government at 551 A.S. It played an important role the next decade in organizing the House's military and police which were used in the campaign of Queen Eleanor I against the Bretonian Buccaneers. That established the Fabian Alliance permanently as one of the major political parties which contested in equal terms for the governance of the Kingdom.

For half a century, from 580 A.S. to 630 A.S. the Fabian Alliance almost repeatedly ruled Bretonia. During it's governance it significantly increased workers' wages, promoted trade with the other Houses and it also funded extraterrestrial projects, like the Stokes Mining Facility. All these measures helped Bretonia's economy, decreased it's unemployment and increased its exports. However at 630 A.S. a major scandal regarding the expenditure of the Armed Forces' annual budget erupted, which forced the Fabian government to quit.

This created internal strife and further destabilization as its prominent members vied for power. Fabian remained in the opposition for more than 50 years as Bretonia continued to prosper under the Royalists' control, something which most Federalists attribute to the previous Fabian governance. During these decades it significantly lost a large portion of its influence on the working class. As the Bretonian Golden Age (589 - 674 A.S.) finished and Bretonia gradually started stagnating, the Fabian Alliance was still unable to regain its lost political power despite conducting a strong opposition all these years. That led to another internal crisis for over a decade which ended at 685 A.S. with its renaming to Federalist Party and a new definition of its political platform.

The reason for this political change is mostly attributed to the Fabian Alliance'€™s decline of influence over Bretonia's state corporations during the previous decades, organisations which had by then become strong supporters of the Royalist Party. Therefore the Federalist Party was forced to acquire a more liberal approach supporting open market policies and private businesses. However it still retained it's socialist roots. This new political angle finally started gaining momentum by 700 A.S., and returning in power during the year'€™s May elections. Throughout the 8th century both the Royalist and Federalist party alternated in power, while neither of them managed to significantly pull Bretonia back in the route of growth. The primary reason for this setback is largely due to the creation of weak and fragile governments. The Federalist Party, despite the political support of the IMG, Gateway and other private entities, was still experiencing significant leaks towards the newly-arrived Green Party while the Royalist Party was also weakened after its failure with the Founder's Day Revolt.

As the 9th century dawned, Bretonia remained largely unaffected by the Nomad war of 800-801 A.S. Queen Carina and the Royalists pushed for the expansion of Bretonia in the Taus, something which the Federalists opposed under the leadership of Gregory Hibbert. The outcome was the war with Kusari commonly known as the Tau War. At first the Bretonian public didn't support the war and sided with the Federalists who were strongly opposing it. In the end nationalism prevailed in the general elections of 816 A.S., allowing the Royalists to narrowly defeat the Federalists in an election which was later called "the most important in Bretonia's modern history". Followed by the Kusarian invasion of Bretonian core space and the siege of Planet Leeds, the political power of the Royalists significantly wained. With the arrival of the Gallics in late 818 A.S., it was obvious that they couldn't sustain a government on their own. Therefore, at the beginning of 819 A.S. and after a week of intense negotiations, for the first time in the parties' history, the Royalist and Federalist party created a coalition government and several Federalist MPs joined the Cabinet as Ministers.

Final Words

• You are free to ask in this thread any questions regarding the Federalist Party or generally about the Bretonian Parliament. Feel free to send your feedback as well.
• We maintain a forum-only presence!
• Regarding the History section of the post, we mostly used the canon RP of this post and evolved around it in order to create a Party with rich history and a considerable political power. I'd also like to say that the Royalist Party leader read and accepted the passages which involved his Party in the past centuries.
• Many thanks to Jammi for his big help on releasing this post! We should also not forget Dab who is undoubtedly the father of not only the Federalist Party but of the whole Bretonian Parliament.

Might be an idea to duplicate this in the stories forum as well. I should probably put together a similar dossier on the Royalists too - might as well keep everyone abreast of the entire current process.

That said, was happy to help. I hope you can get a few more MPs and heat the Commons up a bit.

Wow, I thought I was the only one doing Political Parties now, granted a Political Party in Colorado, but still!. This is very well written and thought out, I'd likely apply to join, but I tend to play parties that are firmly left-wing. than Left-Centre.:)Still hope you have as much fun with this as I do with the CWP. ^_^

The Federalists started receiving substantial support from BPA and Cryer. Our numbers are also slightly better than a few days ago:)

Roster updated.

I dont understand what is it you federals will do? Fight the Galiics, start a coup and hope to surrender to the Gallics or just be an annoying inRP Party?

You should make clear your ingame intentions as ideology alone is not enough to go by!

Firstly, I need to re-state that we do not have an in-game presence. Everything we do will be done in the Parliament threads and in some other messages in the Communication channel.

About our agenda, we are following the principles outlined in the "Ideology" part of the post. We are obviously in favor of Bretonia defending itself until the very end from the Gallic horde yet we do not exclude talks with the Gallics in order to arrange peace.

I understand the necessity of making our intentions and goals clearer yet I am purposefully not doing that because it will create confusion. The world of politics is filled with lies and vagueness so even if we publicly state now that we will defend Bretonia until the very end, we may in a later date try to reach a consensus to terminate the war with King Charles should an opportunity arise. However we cannot say the latter thing in public, not yet at least.

As I have created a thread about a potential restart of Bretonian politics I would like to give this page a bump. Please note that the membership paragraph is not up-to-date.

It's very interesting.
I would like to know, what do you think about lobbying?

The Feralist Party like most political parties in Bretonia is being lobbied by the biggest entities of Bretonia. This in-game translates into IMG, Gateway Shipping, BPA and Cryer. Perhaps Interspace Commerce as an inter-house mega corporation too. The Royalists on the other hand receive lobbying from BAF, BMM and Bowex. Perhaps IC as well.

This does not mean that the MPs work exclusively for the factions' interests, of course. It is all about the disposition they have towards each faction and the personality and goals of each of them.
