EFL| Oil & Machinery Faction Creation Request. - EFL Oil and Machinery - 06-16-2018

Overview:

Unlike other colonies in the Sirius sector, cores systems of Gallia proved to have rich deposits of oil. Utilizing these limitless deposits was far more efficient for building up the new House than using other sources of energy. In 234 AGS a giant corporation, owned in majority by the Gallic crown called EFL Oil at the time, realized the potential of these oil deposits and was granted the responsibility of control, extraction, transportation and processing of this “black gold” throughout Gallic colonies in the early years of the empire.

In 440 AGS, at a time when space colonization was on the rise, EFL acquired and absorbed several large shipbuilding and engineering firms and companies, becoming EFL Oil & Machinery. This new mega-corporation soon became responsible for building and maintaining many of the current space stations in Gallic space including shipyards and space colonies.

Currently, EFL Oil & Machinery is the largest Gallic corporation with the total value of assets and enterprises estimated to be somewhere near five hundred billion credits. It is also one of the largest employers in the Gallic sector, with its employees counting as high as six million.

EFL Oil & Machinery maintains a large presence in every corner of the Gallic economy. In addition to building stations, the corporation is also the largest station operator in Gallia. Due to its sizeable reserves, EFL has been able to compensate the enormous losses incurred during the Second Gallic War. Reserves are not infinite and the war is still underway, both on the homefront and Sirius, which puts the company under further stress due to the incoming contracts with defence agencies and mainly with the Gallic Royal Navy.

Unlike other companies and corporations in Gallia, IDF who is smaller in size or GMS who is independent of the crown, EFL Oil & Machinery is the symbol excessive crown involvement in a corporation and also Gallic economy. This close involvement with the crown paints a target on the company and makes it a favoured target for Crown’s enemies such as the Maquis.

Bases of Operation:

Abbeville Production Facility

Once operated by Solar Engineering, Abbeville Production Facility is a relatively modern production centre built around the core of the Abbeville Mining Station. Solar purchased the station from Nery Space Construction during a time where Picardy was faced with an economic crisis. The prospect of cheap labour motivated Solar's decision to establish a number of labour-intensive industries near Amiens.

Worker conditions on the station were rumoured to be poor; those who spoke out against their conditions quickly found themselves on a shuttle back to Amiens, where dozens of others would eagerly take their place. As a part of the merger, this facility came under the ownership of EFL Oil and Machinery, who pledged to look into the reports of poor conditions on behalf of the Crown. Presently, the station is heavily involved in the production of construction alloys and energy field equipment.

Beauvais Production Facility

Beauvais was one of the first space stations constructed by EFL Oil and Machinery back in the time when it was called EFL Oil. The company initially built its fortune on planetside mining of oil and producing a wide array of petroleum products. Moving to space was a necessary step forward to move the most ecologically hazardous productions away from the planet's surface, and to gain access to easily accessible resource deposits located in space.

EFL started constructing the station in the year 281 A.G.S., and in the hundreds of years to come the facility was rebuilt several times. It contains a number of highly efficient petroleum processing facilities, making Beauvais one of the primary sources of petrochemicals in the Ile-de-France system. The station is also known for being the closest lawful facility to Beaumont Base. Junkers are fairly frequent visitors at Beauvais, despite the attempts of EFL managers to drive the ambiguous faction away from the facility.

Briancon Station

Briancon is a large civilian space station maintained by EFL Oil and Machinery and the Gallic Royal Police. Since the Gallic Border Worlds became an area of fighting between the Council and the Gallic Navy, Briancon was one of the first installations to receive advanced weapon systems, which included long-range missile turrets.

Reinforced armour and an advanced weapons grid were meant to guarantee the safety of the station inhabitants even in the years when the Council was raiding Dauphine system on a regular basis. In truth, the Council never attacked the station in force, as Council field commanders routinely refused to endanger the large civilian population of Briancon.

Chartres Space Colony

Chartres Space Colony is the oldest space colony in Gallic space that still retains its original core modules since the foundation of the colony in the year 341 A.G.S. It was expanded several times, increasing its housing capacity to over 1.500 by 650 A.G.S.

Along with multiple housing modules, the station also has a number of light factories, and is known as one of the primary sources of high-quality plastics in Gallic space. The station has been operated by EFL since its foundation, but the company is rumoured to be considering to transfer the station to civilian authorities due to the low-profit margins versus the high administrative costs.

Montlucon Space Colony

The large space colony of Montlucon was built in 644 A.G.S. by EFL Oil and Machinery. The facility is representative of a new generation of space colony facilities. Montlucon was built utilizing recent advances in technology, and follows strict quality standards for space habitats. EFL managed to keep the station profitable for most of its existence. The Second Gallic War attracted a large number of migrants from the Languedoc system, bringing the station to full capacity. EFL's policies deny the acceptance of any additional people, even relatives of the current settlers.

The station also houses one of the largest Polymer production plants in Gallic space. High-quality Polymers that require Zero-G production methods, and various byproducts are exported from Montlucon to a number of locations in Auvergne, Orleanais, and beyond.

Riom Shipyard

Riom was one of the first stations built in the Auvergne system. A light industrial facility that mainly mass-produces smaller spacecraft for the civilian market, it has seen a considerable boost in productivity as the nearby Clermont colony expanded, and its citizens required small civilian craft to travel to the Gallic core worlds. Riom also produces larger civilian space fighters for various corporations.

Romorantin Space Port

Romorantin is one of the older stations in Orleanais, built by EFL in 386 A.G.S. . It once was an important shipping point and a place where mining companies brought ores mined from various parts of the vast Loire Asteroid Field. For some time, the station was also used to build and maintain ships and build framework components for the jump gates to Lyonnais and Berry. The Beuvron Debris Field formed as a result of this unchecked space construction activity. Since then, economic activity in the area has been declining steadily.

The Loire asteroids proved to be difficult to mine, and nowadays no legal mining activity takes place in the field. Ship construction improvements resulted in transport ships no longer needing to stop for refuelling on their way through Orleanais' trade lane system. Romorantin remains a well-known station where the descendants of the first Orleanais space settlers still reside, but the port currently has very few shipping contracts to keep it alive. EFL loses billions every year to keep the station operational, and despite the resistance of the local community, the company plans to scrap the port in the coming decade unless it can find a source of income to sustain itself.

Goals:

1. Maintain and expand influence in all corners of Gallic industry and commerce ensuring EFL supremacy.
2. Assist Gallic corporation through shipbuilding and base building contracts.
3. Assist the Gallic Royal Navy & Gallic Royal police with shipbuilding and maintenance, at home and on the warfront.
4. Develop further relations and secure contracts with other Sirian corporations; namely in Kusari & Rheinland.

I always find it distasteful when description of bases, ships or technology is taking more space than what faction stands for.

It's what people call "flavortext", and some people actually enjoy reading it and/or writing it
Crazy, right?

Copy and paste from wiki is not flavour text.

I think that it's effortless copy paste and duplication of already existing information. Official faction should strive to be better and provide something more than what developers have already written for NPC faction. But that's just me giving feedback on what I saw in this creation request.

RE: EFL| Oil & Machinery Faction Creation Request. - Thyrzul - 06-22-2018

First you've found the chosen ratio of goals/aims to the other details distasteful, then you've found the usage of already existing information in unchanged form effortless, so I'm not sure what exactly is the issue, your response made your feedback more confusing than clearing it up. Though I do agree with the second point you brought up.

Overall I do find the Goals and the Roles section sufficient enough to describe the core of what EFL stands for, past that I'm personally not concerned with how many other details this post contains.

On the other hand, since I've had a brainfart this morning and the rest of the dudes liked the idea, we might have "something more than what developers have already written for NPC faction" soon. I'm having an exam before the end of this month, so not that soon.

I think it is way safer to do that, rather than defend against "But How Your Faction Has Something That Is Not In Their Lore" coming from all the sides when a thread like this pops up.

RE: EFL| Oil & Machinery Faction Creation Request. - Laz - 06-22-2018

Just to point out - When Vulk asked me to format this I did state that the base section needed either cutting entirely or a serious rework but he said it was fine as is. At most I'd say one paragraph written by yourselves describing the functions and duties, but what is there right now (and with the images) it is just clutter and clunky. Other than the bases, it's pretty okay imo.
