Mer Méditerranée

Mer Méditerranée

Mer Méditerranée is a massive blue nebula comprised primarily of methane and water ice. The vast majority of the Mediterainee lies outside of the borders of Provence, and beyond human-inhabited space in general, merely a wisp on the edge of a much larger insterstellar formation. The shape of the cloud often changes with the will of gravitational forces in the system, churning and roiling with every planet's march around the sun.

The pristine beauty of the cloud is not lost upon the Gallic people, who travel from far and wide to "cloudwatch," relaxing in the light of the Provence sun and gazing into the nebula. Whether from the decks of the finest Lucullus or a more meager civilian craft, the Mer Méditerranée is a sight to behold.

The tiny part of the cloud that touches Provence often changes shape as it is affected by the gravitational forces in the system.

The extremely slow but constant changes in this portion of the nebula have become a major tourism market in Gallia known as "Cloud watching".

Esterel Nebula

Originally part of the greater Mer Méditerranée, the Esterel Nebula was created in 201 AGS when an extremely powerful coronal mass ejection tore the nebula from its parent cloud, leaving it to drift aimlessly throughout the Provence system.

Maures Nebula

The Maures Nebula is classified as a "giant molecular cloud" by the Société Astronomique Gauloise, consisting primarily of condensed helium gas and trace impurities that give a distinctive blue color. Thick and dense, the nebula offers excellent protection from scanners, and rumors abound of a Brigand base deep in the cloud.

GMS surveys of the belt revealed gneiss and schist formations laced with miniscule veins of rhodium, revealing that the belt may have originally been a microplanetoid or large asteroid that suffered an impact with another stellar body.

Occasionally, Gallic youths and well-known racers alike use the field as an impromptu racetrack, often finding they aren't quite as skilled as their boasts would lead Cannes resortgoers to believe.

A dense field made up of exceptionally large asteroids, it is speculated that the Vaccares Asteroid Field was once a small moon or planet that broke apart during Provence's formation. Despite several surveys by the Gallic Metal Service, no useful resources have ever been found in the field.

    Nebulae

    Mer Méditerranée

Mer Méditerranée is a massive blue nebula comprised primarily of methane and water ice. The tiny part of the cloud that touches Provence often changes shape as it is affected by the gravitational forces in the system.

The extremely slow but constant changes in this portion of the nebula have become a major tourism market in Gallia known as "Cloud watching".

    Asteroid Fields

    Vaccares Asteroid Belt

A dense field of asteroids, believed to be a small moon or planet that broke apart during Provence's formation. Once rich in rare minerals, the field has long since been depleted of any feasible quantity of ore.

    Camargue Dust Field

A rather compact field of dust and small asteroids, the Camargue Dust Field is held in tight orbit of Planet Marseille and regularly trawled by the Gallic Metal Service's Toulon installation. Many of the small rocks and compacted dust within the field contain extremely rare metals and minerals, making the efforts of the GMS - and the illicit miners that they have tried repeatedly to stop - more than worth the trouble it takes to collect such miniscule returns.
