As the Gaians began to expand the scope of their operations beyond merely contesting operations in Edinburgh, it was quickly realized that the cause would need to secure capital in order to actually fund the grander ambition of taking on Planetform outside of Bretonia. Bulky cargo ships would simply not suffice, likely to be ripped into by the always eager Bounty Hunters kept on the payrolls of Aristocrats more than happy to hide their dirty laundry from the public eye. The Leatherback was the solution to the problem identified in the term "bulk" transport, designed to carry cargo between ports as quickly as possible and with a generous tolerance for punishment. They also serve an alternative, albeit more limited role in the Independent Worlds and can be seen chasing down larger and more vulnerable transports to either return with something vital or just the cold hard credits necessary for the cause.
