For over a century, Mannheim Station was the northernmost outpost of the once vast Kruger Minerals commercial empire. Ever since the devastating loss of the 80-Years War, Kruger has eked out a minimal yield of H-Fuel by mining the upper atmosphere of Planet Heidelberg. This process has never been economical, as the impure gasses require expensive resynthesis. Despite this, Mannheim has always been heavily subsidized by Rheinland as the sole remaining domestic source of H-Fuel.
In the aftermath of the Rheinland Civil War, Kruger found itself flush with questionably awarded government contracts as a reward for its early and enthusiastic support of the Imperial movement. Having won the Emperor’s favor, Kruger were allocated a generous grant to renovate Mannheim’s facilities with little scrutiny or oversight. Kruger has since struck a deal with IDF Shipping, beginning to incorporate Gallic Cracking Catalysts and processes into their own extraction methods.
Kruger claims to have made a major breakthrough in the resynthesis process, with H-Fuel exports from Mannheim increasing eightfold since 830 AS. The sudden and uncharacteristic jump has raised the suspicions of some regulators on New Berlin. Kruger has so far used its newfound political influence in the capital to resist demands for an audit of the station’s records and production chain.
