Commissioned in 745 AS, the Yukon was one of Liberty's oldest serving vessels at the start of the Gallic War, with some senior officers joking that she was more "modernization package" than hull. Her continued presence as California's garrison ship during the war was seen in hindsight as a symptom of deep-seated complacency among Liberty's military planners, who could not conceive of an enemy capable of defeating the might of the Liberty Navy. When the Gallic Carcassonne fleet breached California and destroyed San Diego Border Station in 824 AS, Congress was thrown into panic. The outmatched Yukon was quickly pulled back to Planet Los Angeles and reinforced by the Battleship Alma from Hudson.
While the Alma tackled the Carcassone, the Yukon was ordered to link up with Bretonia's Battleship Harlow for a joint offensive into Cortez. This bid to re-open a desperately needed supply artery to New London was quickly complicated by the counter-attack of Gallia's Betheny fleet. After months of feints, raids, and counter-raids, the Betheny divided its forces to lure the Harlow away, in what West Point begrudgingly studies as a masterpiece of deception warfare. The Yukon fleet soon found itself isolated and under attack by the heavier and more modern Valor. The Yukon suffered extensive damage in the resulting battle, with the crew tenaciously fighting a delaying action to buy time for Allied reinforcements to arrive.
The Yukon fell shortly after the Harlow entered the fight, however the damage the battleship and its escorts inflicted on its bitter enemy turned the tide of the ensuing battle. The Yukon's last stand resulted in the award of multiple Lone Star medals for heroism, and is a popular subject of novels, games, and holoreels in post-war Liberty. The wreckage of the battle eventually formed the Aruba Debris Field -- work to scrap the Yukon's broken hulk began in 828 AS.
