Sensors have detected a small planetoid at the center of the Stone Veil nebula that exhibits strange energy signatures. However, close analysis is not possible due to local interference, and the abundant metal oxides in the planetoid and its surrounding chunks prevent scanners from penetrating deeper beneath its surface. Irregular structures of human and nonhuman origin pockmark the surface of the main body.
Tritonis is the subject of more than a few spacer tales told in seedy freeport bars and on lonely patrols. When forward scouts for the Kingdom of Gallia were first charting out invasion routes for the eventual conquest of Sirius, they discovered the enigmatic star system of Tau-61 through an unstable jump connection. They found peculiar astronomical phenomena hidden among the clouds and struggled to find any semblance of true shelter from the high levels of gamma and neutron radiation that plagued the system. Salvation came with the accidental discovery of a planetoid hidden within the Stone Veil cloud.
This planetoid, dubbed Tritonis many years after its discovery, was the site of a gargantuan ancient ruin of unknown origin. Intrigued by the groundbreaking discovery, the Kingdom of Gallia dispatched Royal Intelligence assets to secure the area and establish a research base. The massive complex was hewn into the rock of the structure to better access the ruins and use the planetoid itself as a shield from heavy radiation. Though initial hopes believed there would be findings enough to revolutionize Gallic understanding of the universe, they were aborted by the imminent collapse of the jump hole that led them to this strange place.
Without regular supply convoys, the expedition struggled to survive over the coming weeks, with members dying to attrition with every passing day. In a desperate, last ditch effort, the remaining survivors attempted to regroup and make for the sole potentially habitable moon in the system. Failing that, they would bank on a sublight burn out of the Labyrinth to get some kind of signal out to the unknowing Kingdom they called home. None of these efforts bore fruit, and the explorers never returned home.
Over the course of history, classified knowledge regarding Tritonis and Tau-61 became the stuff of urban legend and conspiracy theory amid the conflicts between the Crown and Council dissidents. Conspiracy passed into legend as spacers yet spoke of a fabled, forgotten ruin in the clouds, hidden behind an ever-shifting doorway to a graveyard of a system. Some were even said to have found the mythical place, yet none ever returned. With the exodus of Vagrants carving a terrifying trail of destruction through the Orkney system, these legends have been resurrected. They say that all spacers' tales hold a grain of truth to them, after all.
