Frühlingswache

Hereafter referred to as the "Wache" (Guard).

Introduction

It’s been almost a year of anarchy and dissonance for the Bundschuh movement. Following the controversial exile of two of the most influential politicians the Party had seen so far, and the subsequent election chaos, the notoriously non-unified revolutionary front began to break up once again. Following a period of relative stability under a centralized party leadership concentrated in the Vereinigte Widerstandsarmee (VWA), the chaos erupted completely after said organization began to fade into obscurity.

Now, with the emergence of the White Rose Movement trying to form a competing party and line for the people that consider themselves Bundschuh, hardliners from everywhere try to influence the further direction the party is going to take.
One of these movements is the Frühlingswache (Spring Guard). Comprised of the most loyal ‘Hauptist’ thinkers and soldiers and based off the most prestigeous project the VWA ever pursued - the WGS Ostara - the Wache is centered around the very ideals of Realpolitik. For a member of the Wache, the ends justify the means. Always.

History

679 A.S - Origins

The Bundschuh as a movement are believed to have been founded by a small group of New Berlin University students. These well-read and well-educated Rheinland civilians were frustrated at the conditions that the Eighty-Years-War had imposed on Rheinland’s people, relegating them to practical serfdom. They decided they would no longer abide a society where one’s role in life was determined at birth due to an utter lack of class mobility.

Over several decades as the Eighty-Years-War ground to its terrible climax, the Bundschuh grew into an uncommonly efficient and disciplined underground movement that began to accumulate more and more influence among the working classes. With numbers kept high by angry, destitute workers and supported financially by sympathetic Neu Berlin intelligentsia, the Bundschuh quietly gathered influence and waited. The Rheinland Empire was quite clearly failing and faltering, it was only a matter of when. After the fateful Battle of Yanagi, their time came.

700 A.S - Popular Revolution

The loss of the Eighty-Years-War and the defeat of the most powerful military that Sirius had thus far known at the hands of a corporation was too much for Rheinland’s people to bear. Decades after decade of ceding already-miniscule rights to further a total war effort, only to leave Rheinland humiliated, broken, a shattered memory of her former glory. This was the spark of an event that even the Empire could not withstand.

The self-proclaimed Popular Revolution began in Dresden, where Daumann miners who had worked 16-hour-shifts for months, with no pay, finally decided that enough was enough. Using weapons and supplies smuggled in by underground Bundschuh cells, revolutionary groups all over Rheinland fought what defenders of the Emperor remained for five bloody years before overthrowing the old Rheinland Empire and ushering in the Rheinland Federal Republic, the Bundesrepublik.

715 A.S - New Government and Exile

With the fall of the Rheinland Empire, the Bundschuh finally succeeded in realizing their dream of a parliamentary representative democracy, planting the seeds of a new government in the ash of the old.

It was not to last.

By 715 A.S the aristocratic elements in Rheinlandic society had more or less re-consolidated their power in both the government and wider society. Eager to cling to their reclaimed authority, legislation crept through parliament that returned the Bundschuh party to its prior outlawed, underground state. The group that had technically founded the Bundesrepublik was fast-fading into obscurity. Unable to halt the decay of the new government from the inside, the Bundschuh’s numbers dwindled.

More and more, the now-outlawed group’s operations began to consist of spaceborne attacks on political targets or unwary Military patrols. Accordingly, its membership began to consist more and more of former Hessians or other pirates, instead of the intelligentsia in which its roots lay. Despite fading into the collective memory of Rheinland’s populace, the Bundschuh clung to survival as a bottom-feeder pirate group for nearly a century, salvaging survival from the trade-lanes.

800 A.S - Battle of Schatten

By 800 A.S Rheinland had become a puppet of the nomads. Government and military officials alike fell beneath the thrall of the aliens, marching in lockstep toward the annihilation of the sector. Ironically it was the weakness of the Bundschuh, their past successes long-forgotten, that allowed it to almost entirely escape notice from the Wilde. Consequently, The Order chose the Bundschuh as the front for their attempts to infiltrate the viper’s nest that Rheinland had become. This culminated in a desperate attack on Schatten Research Station, near the Bundschuh’s primary base at Frankfurt.

No first-hand accounts of battle exist, save a Bundschuh report compiled immediately after the operation. Only a single squadron of snubcraft was on hand for the Bundschuh; among them finest aces of the dwindling movement. Renowned Freelancer Edison Trent joined along with the Bundschuh’s then-leader Claus Botzler and Rheinswehr defectee Diedrich Von Claussen in an attempt to destroy experimental weapons - intended to be used by puppet Rheinland against Kusari.

What exactly transpired in the heart of the Westerwald is unknown, but only a ragged few of those who set out returned, among them Von Claussen and Trent - their mission successful.

801 A.S - Second Wind

With financial aid from The Order, the Bundschuh launched a massive public relations campaign in the tumult following the Nomad War’s end. While many of these transmissions and efforts at propaganda were swiftly quashed by Kanzler Steller’s regime, the survivors of the Nomad War did not forget what they had heard.

Swelling membership and an influx of credits caused the Bundschuh to redouble their traditional efforts, earning its first real successes in nearly a century. However, the Federal Republic dug in its heels, and nothing lasting became of them; not even the rise of the patriotic Volksfront movement could come close to overthrowing the establishment. The Buro der Marineintelligenz now had decades of experience and training to combat the Bundschuh on both the fields of battle and propaganda, providing an insurmountable obstacle for any of Rheinland's revolutionary movements, even unified.

820 A.S - Enter the Widerstand

With the eventual fall and subsequent disbandment of the Volksfront movement, another dark age for the Bundschuh reared its head. Tiny factions such as the Rheinlandische Volksfreiheitspartei appeared for short periods of time, but their efforts for the most part accounted to naught. For quite some time, the revolutionary pendulum remained angled towards the "Hessian" avenue; a pragmatic effort to strike terror into the hearts of the Federal Republic's enforcers. As a result, despite very real problems and injustices remaining in Rheinland's present regime, the "terrorists" began to lose even more sway with Rheinland's captive populace.

A new generation of academics, however, began to take issue with their government. One Professor Augusta Adler, at great risk to herself shouted out a rallying cry for these and other elements to breathe new life into the exiled party. Her call was met with far more success than she could have hoped for.

823 A.S - From Ashes

Though its role in the consequences of the Libertonian War could only be considered "meager", the Widerstandsarmee's constant pressure on the Federal Military's flanks from behind the Bremen front may have contributed to Liberty gaining the advantage in Bering and Hudson instead. Ultimately humanitarian to the end, the Widerstandsarmee immediately followed suit when the two sides finally put differences aside when Hudson found itself at risk of becoming another Dark Matter casualty.

The Exiled Party under the political heft of Vorsitzende Freya Eistochter and the apparent refusal of Oberst Erich Klugmann to surrender to demise in a hundred forms have contributed to a Renaissance in the Exiled Party's own model democracy. While the Widerstandsarmee heavily influenced almost all spaceborne action, even the smaller sects tugging for control over the Bundschuh's and Rheinland's future have found that their own standards of living and voices have only been emboldened in the last three years.

The construction and subsequent destruction of Zwickau at Dresden attracted its share of naysayers from within for the entirety of its short life, but none without the Party can argue that the schematics scavenged for the limited production of Military technology did not at least moderately compensate for the loss of life and the terrible blow set upon the ideologues.

The Nuremberg crisis and the need for hundreds of millions to flee a dying planet had since become the most paramount fixation of the Widerstandsarmee's ragtag flotilla - Their actions here may have spelled the ultimate success or failure of the Bundschuh's slow return to prominence within Rheinland.

Following the exile of both Eistochter and Klugmann, however, the Widerstand faced trouble in the shape of missing leadership. With the institution of Nika Haupt as the new Oberst and her campaign to unify the Bundschuh movement under one flag, she almost succeeded in putting the rebels on the map of even the Military again - that is, until she vanished under suspicious circumstances.

824 A.S - Splintered State

It is this time that the Wache as an institution begun. Following Nika Haupt’s victory in the election campaign for the position of Parteivorsitzende and her subsequent efforts to centralize Bundschuh operations, she had become a burden on her enemies. Surprisingly, the blow struck against her came only partly from within.

The HVEB, a Bundschuh sect that had been caught up within the powerplay during the election, used their contacts and insider knowledge to let the influential figure vanish in an MND operation. Robbed of their central authority, the Bundschuh quickly descended into the state we know today, with every faction vying for control of the Party. Michael Wolf, Haupt’s right hand, saw the situation escalate and established that staying would be too dangerous. He assembled the most loyal people he could find, and secretly infiltrated the Ostara, the VWA’s sole capital vessel. With it, and the hope that they found refuge somewhere with the Allies of the VWA, he fled.

Meanwhile, Nika Haupt had not been idle. While she had been captured by an MND operative and held on Hammersee, she managed to flee her captor and make refuge on Newport station. After a while, she ran into a supply freighter crew of Wolf’s refugees, who had been operating under a pirate flag during this time to survive. She returned to the ship, and was yet again handed command of the movement.

After months of preparation, the Wache has finally managed to move back into Rheinland, and managed to do so without alerting most of their enemies. Their declared goal, to make sure Rheinland falls by any means necessary, has since served as a rallying cry among the remaining supporters of the VWA within the Bundschuh, and as of yet, it is not safe to predict an outcome for the power struggles to come.

Goals

Primary

• Overthrow of the Federal Republic of Rheinland by any means necessary.
• Diplomatic manipulation and coordination of entities in Sirius capable of aiding in the success of the above.
• Evaluate the value and the future of the Bundschuh movement as a whole and the Weisse Rose in particular to establish if the rebellion has a chance of succeeding still.
• As a last resort, expand influence into the resource-rich Sigmas in an effort to find influence and resources there.

Secondary

• Use mobility and guerilla warfare to keep the Rheinland Military and Police off-balance.
• Make certain that any elements of the HVEB and their influence is removed from the popular revolution.
• If necessary, remove counter-revolutionary elements from the Bundschuhpartei

Tertiary

• Deepen the Wache’s relation with Sigma-based entities and traditional Bundschuh allies to ensure autarky from the Hessians and the Bundschuh itself.
• Integrate the Wache as a separate signatory of the Sigma Alliance.
• Expand the Wache’s flottila of ships to combat the overcrowding aboard Ostara as well as make sure the movement is combat-capable.

Ships

Borderworlds Line - Sabre, Cutlass etc.

Coming from backgrounds as diverse as Hessian leftovers, sympathetic Freelance donations, or the end result of Bruchsal’s engineers making use of spare parts; the venerable, antiquated, but still formidable Borderworlds ships have long formed the backbone of spaceborne Bundschuh agents. Even with military-grade equipment becoming more common amongst the Bundschuh, the Borderworlds line still resonates with those pilots in need of reliability and ease of maintenance for their duties.

Civilian Line - CTE, Raven’s Talon, Waran etc.

Occasionally, Rheinlandic dissidents seek shelter with the Bundschuh. As a gesture of thanks, many offer their trusty ships, whether physical or schematics, while they remain in exile with their families. While these ships often struggle to efficiently handle the infamously overcharged Bundschuh weaponry, they have still been put to devastating use by Widerstand activists against even military-grade technology.

Rheinwehr Line - Wraith, Phantom, etc.

As the Bundschuh attracts more and more disillusioned Military defectors, they take their ships with them. Unfortunately for the Wache, they lack the production capabilities of the Bundschuh itself, so Rheinwehr Technology is seen very rarely.

Asgard Line - Odin, Thor, etc.

Considering the fact that the Hessians sheltered the Wache for a not insignificant amount of time before their resurgence, the prevalence of Hessian-designed craft is surprisingly low among the combat personnel of the Wache. It is not unlikely, however, that that personal preference will soon have to make way for practicality - as long as the hessians harbor them, it is unlikely that they will receive much in the way of other equipment.

LWB Line - Sichel, Sense.

The Landwirtrechtbewegung recently unveiled their new counter-Synth Foods-superweapons to Sirius in the form of… What looks like patchwork abominations vaguely resembling a marriage of Daumann technology with the CTE’s Eagle and Roc. The LWB’s high-ups have bragged of their successes against Synth shipments, but Bundschuh delegates are skeptical of the claims. Because of a surprising preference of Bundschuh pilots for this line of ships, a few of these vessels remain bolted to the outer hull of Ostara as backup.

Advanced Borderworlds Line - Bayonet, Falchion, etc.

Often loaned or leased from sympathetic (but ultimately neutral) Scientists and Freelancers from Heisenberg, these niche snubcraft are considered to be some of the most technologically advanced ships to be found in Rheinland space. Despite their outstanding performance in all aspects, they are less reliable and more finicky than their predecessors, and as such require a patient pilot willing to accept the added responsibilities they require. In the hands of such pilots, they are a finely honed revolutionary instrument.

Order Line - Nephtys, Sekhmet, etc.

While the Order did supply a limited amount of their ship technology to the Bundschuh, the Wache has not yet figured out their stance on the Omicron-based Organization yet.Therefor, the only ship from Order shipyards currently in service is the Generalministerin’s personal Bastet Mk II.

The allies of the Wache can be considered trusted and rare. Some of them might be granted access to the Ostara and will likely regularly converse and operate in tandem with Wache personnel.

Friendly entities can expect aid and backup should they come in trouble in the vicinity of Wache craft, and will occasionally work together with them. The deep-rooted paranoia in most of the Wache’s doctrines however usually prevents overly friendly relations, and many typical Bundschuh allies fall in this category, both because of ideological and operational differences..

Unfriendly

Groups considered unfriendly by the Wache are the most common targets for cordial donation-collecting. Contrary to previous conduct, the Wache tends to use piracy and ‘donation-collecting’ more often, even if they would prefer not to. Pragmatism tends to come first in their doctrine nowadays.

Enemies of the Revolution

Organizations considered hostile to the Wache can expect to be offered little to no mercy if found within what they perceive to be Rheinlandic territory. Polite requests for donation aid become flat-out aggressive piracy. Requests to put oneself in the shoes of Rheinland’s poor become demands to turn back or be destroyed. The groups in this category have through prior undertaking raised the ire of the Wache to the extent of being declared “shoot on sight”.

Policy and Modus Operandi

Autarky

While being part of the Bundschuh movement as a whole, and drawing on justification from it, the declared goal of the new approach is to stay as independent as possible, both from allies within and without the movement. While complete autarky is likely impossible, there is a significant effort made to make sure that there are no reliances on others, be they Bundschuh or other. This primarily means that calling for support will be one of the last resorts for Wache combat craft, with them most of the time relying more on the power of their engines if outmatched.

Realism

The term 'Realpolitik', even though coined in a significantly different context, is probably what describes the new, radical policy best. Rather atypical for a former Bundschuh faction, ideology is secondary, with the prime goal being all that matters. Members of the Wache are adaptable, and tend to be morally flexible whenever needed. High horses and ideologies don't matter if the result is the same - which isn't to say that a Wächter won't use words or pretend to be an idealist if they feel it would further the cause.

Effiency

Another 'perverted' concept the Wache has adopted is that of efficiency. This means that to achieve a goal, sacrifices must be made. Wächter don't shy away from the most extreme of measures, provided that the express goal, namely the complete destruction of the Federal Republic of Rheinland, is put forth. While they are not necessarily proud on the more vicious acts, Haupt's policy explicitly states that the ends justify the means, leading to brutal terrorism and a general disconnect with the more moderate side of the Bundschuh.

Authority unquestioned

The word of the Generalminister is law. One word can condemn someone to death or save their life. While being an elected office, the office is also one that is not bound by term limits, only by the lifetime of the holder. Powerplays and attempts to gain favor with the leadership are common aboard Ostara, but the loyalty to the cause connects them all. Even though the attempts to rise in favour often end in blood, no member of the Wache would ever even consider involving an outsider in those plays, let alone betray the Wache.

Zone of Influence

Frankfurt

Housing the Bundschuh's century-old headquarters at Bruchsal, the vast majority of operations and patrols used to begin and end here. Currently, forays by the Wache tend to be careful, but they do show presence. Interdicted tradelanes are just as common as the occasional skirmish between the Wache and their enemies, just as well as hot-headed political discussions with the various Bundschuh groups in and on Bruchsal

Munich

The Bundschuh Party's assets in Munich suffered a serious blow as a result of the catastrophe that covered the entire system in radioactive dark matter; Diverting from regular Bundschuh policy, Munich is usually considered a secondary target for raids at best. Most, if any, operations here tend to focus on disrupting the military supply lines for the Omicron campaign.

Sigma-15 (Luneburg)

A system whose existence was once unknown to the vast majority of Rheinlanders thanks to its position, the emergence of the habitable moon of Hammersee from the unexplored nebulae ringing the star timed itself impressively with Rheinland's discovery of the solar system itself. Formerly the hub that the Bundschuh used to reinforce all corners of their domain, Bielefeld was forced into the nebulae. The Wache uses the station as an occasional staging point for further forays into the Sigma cluster, considering the high amount of Haupt-sympathizers on the base.

Bremen and New Hampshire

Formerly a staging point for the Widerstandsarmee's guerilla strikes at the flanks of the Rheinwehr, the end of the Liberty War and a lack of exploitable resources meant that the pair of systems cleared out relatively quickly. This of course poses no problem for any Nuremberg refugees, many of whom are more than happy to start the next chapter of their lives under the Party's protection at either Cloppenburg or the recently-constructed Geneva. The Wache, however, considers those system secondary for now. Wache craft are seldomly seen further out than Bremen, and if a ship flying Wache IFF is seen in New Hampshire, it is usually part of the intelligence division.

Sigma-13

Recently, the Widerstand has expanded operations in this borderworld. Following aggressive moves by both the Corsairs and the Unioners, the Widerstand has begun creating a joint task force to attack and undermine Corsair supply operations and the occasional Unioner raid. These actions, approved by the governing bodies of the GMG, are considered one of the most radical changes in Bundschuh politics and might indicate a more aggressive behaviour portrayed by Widerstand pilots.
The Wache continues this stance further, in the past going so far as to actively pirate the system to feed the people aboard their base of operations. With the recent moving to hessian space, raids have become more rare, but do still happen.

New Berlin

Tending to keep to the periphery of New Berlin's mined-out asteroids, the Wache can be seen dealing amicably with or fighting against groups on all ideological spectra. New Berlin is a favorite stomping ground of the Unioners and unaffiliated pirates, to say nothing of the substantial Federal spaceborne presence. The Wache bases itself from hidden strongholds in either the Ruhrfeld or Saarfeld when operating here.

Hamburg

Contrary to regular Bundschuh Policy, recently the Wache has increased their operations within Hamburg. The reasons for this change in policy are as of yet unknown.

Stuttgart

The Wache finds the genuine ideological cause the LWB fight for to be most palatable of their contacts, meaning that despite the distance from their holdings, they are spotted in Stuttgart lending a hand more often than not. In addition, Stuttgart's glut of jump holes make it a common in-transit location, though the Wache keeps to the Walker nebulae in this context.

Koeln

The Wache treads lightly in their Koeln patrols due to its nature as a major route for Unioner diamond-smuggling. The most common destination for any Wache visit to Koeln is to reach the unique Heisenberg Station, a favored diplomatic point of contact with neutral or foreign contacts.

Dresden

While the Wache still harbors a very Klugmann-like stance against the hessians, it has become evident to them that the only avenue of survival is to cooperate with the hessians for now. As such, their operations in Dresden, more often than not basing from the overcrowded Vogtland base, have become increasingly common. While the pilots prefer to keep among themselves and not expose themselves to the hessians too much, this system provides the most likely place to meet a Wache asset right now. Their vessels are occasionally seen raiding supply convoys, but most of the time shuttling supplies towards the Giftnebel, one of the suspected hiding places of Ostara

Omega-11

While attacking Solarius-bound convoys and transports is by far not the most favourite thing to do for the Wache, they are recently seen doing that to a surprisingly high extent. That, and the fact that occasionally a supply convoy is spotted in the system, lead a few people to speculate that Ostara anchors here, likely hidden in one of the planetary fragments..

Regions not mentioned above

Smuggling and diplomatic operations are sometimes flown into systems held by Liberty, Kusari and Bretonia; there are even reports of ships flying Bundschuh green in the Omicrons. These occasions are obviously few and far between.

Ranks

Generalminister - Limit of One.

The commanding individual of the entire group. Other than previous sects, and other than VWA in particular, the head of both the military and civilian arm in the Wache is the same. The Generalminister resides on Ostara and only very rarely leaves it, delegating tasks to the two departments under them. Aside from this, they take on roles of general representation and quasi-head-of-state.

The Generalministerin of the Frühlingswache is Dr. Annika Jana Haupt. ‘Nika’, for short, is probably one of the most controversial figures in recent Bundschuh history. Her style of command is ruthless and methodical, as she was the one that established the new doctrine of ‘the ends justify the means’.

During the trial she stood for murdering a member of a different sect within the Bundschuh, Haupt denounced her allegiance to her former benefactor, Freya Eistochter. She avoided consequences by openly defying Eistochterist ways of operation, and laid open plans how the "witch" was intending to destroy the Bundschuh from within. Following the scandal, the former Oberst, who had been appointed by the party leader, stepped down to make way for a fresher candidate.

Following her recent return to Rheinland, Nika still insists on her title as the official Chairwoman of the Bundschuhpartei, a prospect that many in the Bundschuh still oppose because it unifies her paramilitary power with political one. Legitimate or not, the former Oberst wields significant political power, and her recent ruthlessness have even begun earning her nicknames like ‘the second coming of the witch’.

Oberst - Limit of One.

Translating roughly to “Colonel”, the Oberst has a long-standing tradition as being the highest rank and commanding officer in most sects of the Volksrevolution, be they Bundschuh or not.
In case of the Wache, however, the Oberst is merely the head of the paramilitary division, which, in this case, includes the ‘merchant navy’, a group of freighters that is used to shuttle supplies from and to the Base. The position of Oberst is ranked equally to the one of Kommissaroberst, down below.

Translating roughly to “Colonel-Commissar”, Kommissaroberst is the position of the head of both internal and external affairs. This, in practice, means that the current holder of this position tends to be the primary tool the Generalminister relies on when something needs to be done more quietly than with the fire of guns.
The autonomy of this rank from the military branch is something novel to Bundschuh organization, where intelligence was usually an afterthought.

The Kommissaroberst of the Frühlingswache is Michael Wolf. Founding member of both the VWA and a long standing member of their predecessor, the Volksfront, Kommissaroberst Wolf could be considered one of the oldest members of the Bundschuh still alive. Once an MND officer turned activist after witnessing countless crackdowns against her own citizens - some of which he took part himself - and the continuous erosion of democracy within Rheinland, Wolf turned to the Bundschuh for ideological guidance.

Once one of the fiercest advocates for Eistochter's doctrine, Michael Wolf, often referred to as "Wolf of Frankfurt" in an attempt to play on his surname and his character, has proven to be one if not the only true Ally that Haupt could rely on. After he was the one to elevate her to the position of Oberst of the VWA, he stepped back in the shadows behind her, preferring to exert pressure where needed and if needed. Wolf was also the person that had secured the prestigeous Ostara, a bold move that would prove invaluable to the survival of the ideas that had once kept the VWA afloat.
Fiercely loyal, his pragmatic attitude resonates well with the newly organized remnants of the Armee. Despite the significant amount of time that has passed since his leave with the MND, he still maintains a very militaristic view of the world, preferring to think and talk much more directly than most of his associates. What the man lacks in charisma, he makes up in sheer efficiency, preferring to stand behind more prominent figures and help them out while directing their more shady assets for them.

Kapitän - Limit of One per division.

With the four relevant parts of the Wache clearly defined, each department has one person responsible for them in particular. Those are the Kapitäne, each equal in rank, but only responsible for one particular part of the Organization.

The current Kapitäne are:

• Kapitän zum Raum TBA - Head of Paramilitary operations. Is also the commanding officer of Ostara if the highest ranking officer aboard.
• Kapitäninspektor TBA - Head of the merchant navy.
• Kommissarkapitän Ernst Fischer - Head of internal affairs.
• Prosekutorkapitän TBA - Head of external affairs.

Leutnante

While there are lower ranks within the crew of the Ostara, it is quite rare to meet someone of a lower rank than Leutnant out in space. Each subdivision has it’s own way of designating them, but factually, they are equal in rank. Command structure, if a higher ranking officer is missing, is usually decided on the spot, with the situation most of the time dictating the current commander.

People interested in joining and playing with us should be aware that the paramount aspect this faction is based around is character driven Roleplay, meaning that whoever is interested in applying should be aware that we're not interested in 'I am part of the faction, so I can't think for myself'-type characters. We will not have a recruitment page, instead whoever is interested in joining should either reply to this communiqué or send the faction account a PM with a general overview of what role you want to take on and what your character is about. English skills and an understanding of the Rules as well as the ability to separate inRP and ooRP are absolutely mandatory and non-negotiable.
