A beacon demarcating a favorable entry point into the planet's atmosphere for small vessels.

Initially discovered by the Gas Miners Guild (GMG) in 620 AS, the planet Kurile exists at the heart of an anomaly, a gravitational tidal pool that creates a clear zone in the middle of the otherwise treacherous nebula. The planet itself is entirely covered in water with a saline content so high that it is toxic to almost all known aquatic life elsewhere in Sirius. Despite this, Kurile possesses a single native life form, a microorganism that manages to thrive in its otherwise poisonous oceans. Samura eventually managed to construct a collection platform on Kurile to harvest the microorganisms for use at the fisheries on Planet Junyo. The planet harbors some 2500 workers, all of whom live on the floating platform.

[832 AS] On the Nose

NEW TOKYO -- 832 AS -- Multiple tips from unknown sources have aided, upon investigation, in exposing the abuse of Cardamine between numerous members of the Kusari Keiretsu. Intense work hours have pushed both the youths and the senior citizens towards the consumption of the drug, which is more readily available than ever before, partially due to the foreigner presence upon Roppongi Station.

However, with the recent Farmers Alliance bombing on Roppongi seemingly linked to the sudden increase in Cardamine use among Kusari's businessmen, New Tokyo's residents have expressed sympathy towards the perpetrators, speculating that the Alliance's blatant admission to such a vicious act is not to be taken as a boast or a threat, but as a sign that they will not allow their friends and families to be preyed upon by the greed of corporations that, "do not belong anywhere near our home", said Katsuyori Ichihara, Samura Industries financial consultant, and survivor of the Roppongi attack. "I don't blame them", Mr. Ichihara continued, "that vile drug destroys families."

Due to recent events, Samura Industries has taken it upon itself to act as a substitute for Interspace Commerce within the insurance market and many citizens have already expressed gratitude to Samura and their willingness to provide more financially preferable contracts than what the old management offered.

[832 AS] A Foul Wind

KYUSHU -- 833 AS -- Ravaged by the worst cyclonic storm in recorded history, Kyushu's bustling food production has been thrown into total disarray. Local authorities are struggling to address the infrastructure damage that has been caused by not only the heavy rain, but strong wind and violently surging tide. Even with the storm having passed and dissipated, the full extent of damage is unknown. Missing persons reports are flowing in and the police finds itself too preoccupied with rising unrest given the looming threat of a critical food shortage. What was otherwise expected to be a bountiful harvest now only offers grim tidings. In an uncharacteristic move, many of the Farmers Collectives are putting out calls for aid and promising generous dividends to people with the necessary resources and expertise. This is likely the only way the local economy will recover, faced with dwindling stockpiles an power outages should the measures of the Collectives and the Government fail.

[831 AS/747 AGS] Gate Corps Clash Over 'Blackout'!

ABBEVILLE -- 831 AS/747 AGS -- EFL's 'Resilience Taskforce' today reported its findings on The Blackout, claiming to have gathered forensic evidence that proved the cause as Ageira negligence. A spokesperson claimed that the destruction of the Dublin jump gate by Molly separatists had created a hyperspace feedback loop that was propagated and amplified through the Ageira gate network.

Ageira disputed this finding in their own press release, calling EFL 'fantasists' and countering that their own scientists had narrowed the cause to a rare 'hypernova' stellar event that originated outside the Sirius sector. Both corporations claim that network-wide hardware safeguards have been implemented that would prevent a similar occurrence in the future. Independent researchers have sharply criticized the corporate announcements, accusing both of self-interested misdirection.

Professor Sophia Nagel from Heisenberg Research Station called EFL's accusation 'incoherent' and the hypernova explanation 'nonsense' that did not explain the characteristics of the 'Blackout Pulse'. Despite multiple different Pulse recordings being widely disseminated across the neural net, public efforts have so far failed to triangulate its source.

[831 AS/747 AGS] 'Blackout' Causes Jump Network Fail

MANHATTAN -- 831 AS/747 AGS -- Two days ago Jump Gates failed simultaneously across Sirius, freezing commerce and neural net access across the sector. When the network resumed 31 hours later, restored communications broke the news of Bretonia's loss of the Dublin system. This twin shock has plunged the market into chaos, prompting fears of sector-wide economic recessions. Interspace estimates indicate that the stoppage alone caused billions of credits in losses. Gallia immediately accused Liberty of culpability for the outage, claiming the destruction of Dublin's jump gate instigated a cascading failure in faulty Ageira infrastructure. Ageira has sharply refuted the allegation, claiming such a systemic effect would be physically impossible. Independent researchers in Cologne and the Edge Worlds have also announced that a hyperspace pulse of unprecedented strength was detected moments before The Blackout, with data about 'The Pulse' being widely shared across the neural net in recent days. House authorities have remained tight lipped, refusing to comment on their own observatories' data.

[828 AS] Reconquista

CRETE -- 828 AS -- Following a lull of successful conquests waged by the Corsairs, the Elders have finally broken their silence and issued an ultimatum.

"The standing Navy of the Corsair Empire as well as its irregular raiders must do everything within their means to break existing stalemates or make progress. The enemies of Crete have grown arrogant and take for granted that Corsair offensives have lost their steam, this is an assessment which must be proved woefully wrong."

In response to these express instructions, activity across every Corsair installation has intensified to levels that suggest substantial mobilization.

[828 AS] Samura Debuts Next Generation Surveyor

NEW TOKYO -- 828 AS -- Samura Spokesperson Kenichiro Watanabe introduced a new line of Next-Gen Surveyors to the Consumer Utilities Convention Keynote Expo to thunderous applause: "The Surveyor is more than just a ship, it's a symbol of ingenuity and industrial development to all the Sirian Colonies. It's a pattern that dates back to our origins in the Sol system, and it's a pattern that will persist for many generations to come. Just as we have adapted to meet new challenges, so too must the Surveyor to meet emergent needs."

The Next-Gen Surveyor is slated to roll out multiple updates ranging from technological optimizations to upgraded armor and firepower capabilities. Many of the new modifications directly address a recent study by the Sirius International Institute of Statistics and Economics, citing up to 32 percent losses by BMM and Kruger Minerals to piracy and related factors.

The ship's expanded armour increased the ship's mass by almost 50 percent, which forced Samura's Surveyor team to completely overhaul the ship's power delivery system, powerplant, and hull. The new ship utilizes a power delivery system integrated into the super-alloy frame. The integrated frame was torture tested at the Aso High Altitude Proving Grounds, and sports certifications as best in class for maneuvering with a load under high Gs.

Though time will tell whether the upgrade will prove successful in addressing the increase of piracy, the stock market has greeted the welcome news with a 15 point general increase, and a relative high for Samura and mining sector stocks.

Rumors

Gas Miners Guild
  • The facility here on Kurile supplies Junyo with the Alien Organisms it needs to feed fish in its farms. The flight is not an easy one. But if you were to haul a load, I'm sure it would be worth your while. Make sure you have a fast ship - the Alien Organisms will slowly perish while outside of an atmosphere.

  • The average lifespan of the fish workers here in Kurile is higher than anywhere else in all of house space, perhaps even Sirius. The only other place that has an average lifespan this long is Junyo, although I've heard that Outcasts are known for their longevity. Interesting... But perhaps it is simply the simple life we enjoy here. There is no danger in this kind of farming.

  • My son has been eating the fish raised in Junyo all his life. We get excellent prices since we provide them with their Alien Organisms. When he went to New Tokyo he became very ill, but once he returned, he recovered very quickly. I think he has grown accustomed to the atmosphere on this planet.

  • Shipments to and from this base often fall victim to Corsair attacks. This system is right along their Artifact route, or so I've heard. It is unfortunate because we wish them no harm here. We are simple farmers.

  • The workers at this base want to be here. It is isolated, so we are left to our very simple way of life without much interruption. There is much peace in a simple life - a peace that I could not find in New Tokyo or anywhere else. It is not a life that is for everyone. Isolation can drive people to insanity. If we see it happen in someone, the company will rotate him or her back to New Tokyo. But it is rare.

  • The only way that Samura could compete with Synth Foods was to find a way to boost the amount of fish that our fish farms could produce. Alien Organisms were the answer. They are in demand at our facility in Junyo. The Cryer facility to the west studies the organisms for their own purposes. More recently, Planetform has become interested in them as well. Aside from feeding fish, they seem well-suited to jump start an ecology, or so I'm told. We have no shortage of them on this planet, so we don't restrict the export.

  • Though we are Samura employees, this place is so isolated from the main body of Samura that we do not feel like we are connected. The farmers here are not company soldiers but family men. Harvesting the Organisms here is something that my family has been doing for generations. My son is learning the tricks of the trade now, and he will likely teach his son afterwards.

  • If you have any interest in going to Liberty, you could purchase the Alien Organisms we cultivate here and ship them to the terraforming operations on Atka or California Minor. Liberty uses them for terraforming and research purposes.

  • Samura has sent scientists to this base to study our Alien Organisms more closely. Concern has been raised about the fact that we are indirectly eating them, because the fish absorb some of the more unusual alien compounds into their flesh. I am not certain what they are so worried of. The fish who eat our food are healthier then the stock they used to produce.

Cryer Pharmaceuticals
  • The Kurile Alien Organisms are shipped to our station in this system. They are an important part of our research, and we can always use more. We also purchase basic supplies from this base to use at our facility.

  • The Alien Organisms found on this world and elsewhere in the Edge Worlds, there is no doubt about it, they were engineered. Just like Cardamine. There is no chance that either the Cardamine grass or these alien organisms evolved naturally. Once we knew that, it was a matter of reverse engineering the process - no simple task, and we've not perfected it yet, but it has allowed us to synthesize a Cardamine-like substance at long last.

  • The Outcasts frequently attack our base. It makes me angry that these people live here in relative peace, barring the occasional Corsair attack. I hate these simpletons here. There is something strange about them that I can't put my finger on.
