The Edinburgh system (Aquitaine in Gallic naming) is a remote system that belongs to Bretonnia and is also more or less administered and controlled by Bretonia, but is effectively abandoned. It has no jump gate connection to the rest of Bretonnia.

The system was discovered in the late 7th century. The Planet Gaia was a particular highlight, as it is probably the best terrestrial planet ever discovered by humans. Additionally, the only other planet in the system - Planet Ayr - is also suitable for terraforming. Edinburgh was therefore predicted to have very high development potential and they soon began connecting the system using a jump gate.

The tourist exploitation of Gaia finally began and with it a growing resistance from Cambridge researchers and students of the Green Movement against the plundering of nature and terraforming. They became the eco-terroist Gaians, who set up their secret camp in Edinburgh and successfully defended the system against major development.

Even 200 years after its discovery, Edinburgh was still only an insignificant peripheral system. This changed when a jump hole in the Orkney system solidified. The Tau War was abruptly ended by the Gallic invasion of the Tau, which was able to invade Tau-23, Tau-31 and Edinburgh through the Orkney system. Since Edinburgh was only weakly defended, the Gallic Royal Navy quickly took control and was to retain it for years. Although the Gaians remained on site and disturbed the new opponents, they were unable to do anything against the king's large military force and preferred to keep a low profile.

During the war, the invaders began to develop the system, which they renamed Aquitaine in 826 AS. The planet Gaia was renamed Planet Bordeaux and colonization began. Mollys and Privateers started pirating the Gallics but could not harm them much. Due to the sudden collapse of the kingdom due to an internal intrigue, the royalists had to withdraw from the core worlds and from the front in New London and entrenched themselves in Aquitaine. Planet Bordeaux became the provisional capital of the Gallic Royal Enclave and at its peak had almost 330,000 inhabitants. But the lack of supplies from the old homeland and the grueling war on two fronts meant that it was impossible to win in the long run. In a major offensive, the Enclave 827 AS was destroyed by the BAF in Aquitaine. The system became part of Bretonia again as Edinburgh. But badly scarred by the war, there was simply a lack of resources to finally really colonize Edinburgh. Orthez Station - once the terraforming station for Ayr - was renamed back to Perth Station and used as the headquarters of a BAF observation force.

The Gaians finally take care of Planet Gaia and largely cleanse it of human invaders. Fort Monach in orbit was sealed, preventing access to the planet. This means that the system is now practically abandoned. The scrap fields from the 827 offensive still lie where they were. The remains of the battleships Bradford, Rutland, Chartes, La Riche, Grimsby, Hornsea & Bretteuil make the orphaned system more of a cemetery.

      Areas of Interest

      Nebulae

      Islay Ice Cloud

A beautiful cloud of ice crystals surrounding a field of ice asteroids, the Islay Ice Cloud is considered one of the wonders of Sirius. It is also home to a large contingent of Gaian eco-terrorists who frequently attack unprotected transports.

      Arran Ice Cloud

A large cloud of ice crystals, less stunning than the Islay Ice Cloud. Bounty Hunters have encountered former Bretonian Privateers who have turned to piracy here, leading to suspicions that they are operating out of a hideout or an unknown jump hole within the cloud.

      Asteroid Fields

      Tain Asteroid Field

A small ice asteroid field, home to the entry point to Leeds, it is a popular spot for raiders entering Bretonia looking for transports.

      Forth Debris Field

This debris field formed in the weeks and months following the Battle of Edinburgh between BAF and Enclave forces.

      Wrecks

      Hurricane - B-3/2

Harry Emerson, test pilot for Division 42, was one of the recent casualties of the Tau War. He was killed while on a weapon testing mission, and though he was not killed by the Kusari Naval Forces, the Cardamine smugglers who stumbled upon him made short work of his ship during a brief skirmish, near the Tau-31 Jump Hole.
