Kyushu is known as the "company" planet within Kusari, as many of its inhabitants depend on Samura for their livelihoods. Over the years Samura organized Kyushu farmers into cooperatives to stimulate rice production and sold the rice at premium prices in Tokyo supermarkets.

The introduction of Trade Lanes led to competition with foreign agricultural imports, and the Farmers Alliance, supported by Samura, lobbies for government subsidies and restrictions on foreign foods in Kusari.

Under these circumstances Synth Foods proved to be an overnight success. Particularly in the urban areas of Honshu and New Tokyo. The Farmers were quick to be pulled under Samura's umbrella of influence and weaponised as a means to oppose not merely the Liberty food giant, but tackle all foreign trade.

Today, Kagoshima while ostensibly still labelled a depot, is more akin to a militarized launchpad for Farmers Alliance raiders to strike at Synth's operations in the system. This has become a prevalent focus of the movement in the wake of the Kyushu cyclonic storm that provided foreign competition with the potential for good press. Though unsuccessful in preventing Synth Food's involvement wholesale, the Farmers have made the new market a costly affair.

[834 AS] Alliance mourns death of Rheinland commander

KAGOSHIMA -- 834 -- The Alliance mourns the loss of Naoaki Kurita, the senior FA commander dispatched to oversee our Rheinland subordinates. This theater has recently claimed many Kusari lives in our war against Synth Foods. The Rheinlanders have blamed these deaths on increased activity by Synth’s corporate lapdogs -- the RFP and Bounty Hunters’ Guild. Kurita is believed to have been traveling through the Cologne System to order the LWB assets stationed there back to Stuttgart. He was intercepted by RFP patrols and fought to the honorable death rather than surrendering.

[834 AS] Synth under pressure in Rheinland

KAGOSHIMA -- 834 -- The Rheinlanders have foolishly thrown their doors wide open to Gallic trade, having learnt nothing from their history. Gallia unexpectedly secured the removal of controls on agricultural exports; large-scale shipments have already begun through Zurich and Cologne. Synth has been forced to drastically lower their prices in response. We have prohibited our LWB subordinates from targeting these Gallic shipments as they are a useful weapon against Synth Foods’ profits. While the immediate impact on Stuttgart’s independent farmers is unfortunate, this is a necessary evil for the defeat of the Synth menace in Kusari.

[833 AS] Kishiro Betrays the Kusari People

KAMISU -- 833 -- Kishiro has once again shown its true colors by striking an alliance with the foul foreigners, Synth Foods. The two seek to exploit the Kusari people during a moment of tragedy, following the storms on Kyushu that damaged the exports of nutritious, traditional foodstuffs. We have ordered our subordinates in Rheinland to step up attacks on Synth exports towards the Sigmas, as well as scaling our own attacks within Kusari on both Synth and Kishiro. In the coming months we intend to repeat the victory at Roppongi by delivering another deadly message to Deshima Station, striking fear into invaders and traitors alike. We shall strike as soon as the necessary supplies have been procured.

[833 AS] Relief Convoy Arrives In Kyushu Orbit

Today a combination of Samura, independent, and government backed relief vessels arrived in orbit of the storm-stricken Kyushu, setting up a temporary depot in the planet's low orbit to better organise the distribution of relief supplies. Fighting through high winds, freighters deliver construction supplies, emergency generators and other relief materials to where they're needed most.

Battleship Matsumoto and its task force remain in the Kyushu system to protect the fragile transports from vultures among the Blood Dragons or Golden Chrysanthemums. Some Farmer's Alliance vessels have even been glimpsed to patrol the routes left largely unnoticed by the wider Naval blockade of the system, and have subsequently been given some leniency by Naval Forces and State Police patrols.

While the relief effort is now well underway, criticism has been leveled at Samura for the prioritisation of rebuilding profitable farming infrastructure over the care of the local populations. Spokespeople for the company have repeatedly assured that displaced victims of the storms that continue to ravage the planet are being cared for to the best of their abilities, but that supplies are strained and not all communities are yet able to be reached.

[833 AS] Kyushu Faces Rising Temperatures And Falling Profits

Kyushu, the key to Samura's monopoly on the organically-grown food industry, has faced rising ocean temperatures lately, owing to a vast temperature surge in the mantle plume underneath its largest ocean. This has been compounded by the resultant eruption of several underwater volcanoes, releasing enormous quantities of greenhouse gases into the planet's atmosphere.

Partially as a result of the geological activity, the equatorial monsoon season produced some of the strongest tropical storms ever recorded on Kyushu since its colonisation. These storms devastated the world's agricultural sector as they blew through the most fertile tropical lowlands, destroying as much as 20%% of the planet's annual crop yield, on top of damage to infrastructure and tragic loss of human life.

Many rural communities are reported to be struggling, with some farming communities still remaining flooded ghost towns even a month after the worst of the storms abated, though smaller-scale tempests still rage around the equator. A Samura spokesperson outlined the company's intent to restore the planet and its communities to full productivity by the middle of next year, despite the ongoing circumstance.

[832 AS] A Different Kind of Heat

HOUSTON -- 832 AS -- A horrifyingly large scale firefight broke out in one of Houston's major city centers - Marlton, hundreds upon hundreds of arrests have been made and dozens of brave officers lost their lives in the vicious attack. The attack itself seems to have specifically targeted the city's dedicated police station, resulting in significant amounts of private property damage. The attack appears to have been highly coordinated, reliant on insider information, and carried out by contractors or former professionals, with one LPI spokesperson going so far as to say that this must have been a bought and paid for terrorist attack. Many of the perpetrators of the attack were killed by officers on scene, or by the Naval Emergency Response Team that responded to scattered reports of small arms fire. The LPI has currently released no statement about the progress of the investigation.

[832 AS] Battleship Matsuda Meets Its Demise!

It had long been rumored that the grand Battleship Himeji had not been lost in the Tohoku system as previously thought; That it had been brought back and given a second life by the unlawful elements that are the antithesis of the Kusari state. This rumor had been proven true as the Kusari Office of Intelligence reported movements of a Meiji-class Battleship in the Kyushu system, deploying Golden Chrysanthemum fighter wings that seemed to deliberately target Kusari patrols in the northern part of the system.

Immediately upon learning of this, Battleship Matsumoto and its battlegroup were redeployed from Hokkaido, and within two days were poised and ready to face this new threat. Only a short few hours later, a patrol of fighters reported a warship with the transponder reading Battleship Matsuda operating in the relative open, heading for but not yet reaching the relative safety of the Seiran Dust Cloud.

Matsumoto itself departed with its escort to confront the Chrysanthemum battleship, close to the edge of the nebula. Within minutes of it coming into sensor range, bomber and fighter squadrons from both sides closed in and opening salvos were exchanged between the battleships. It didn't take long before the KNF's preparation was shown to be well worthwhile; their superior numbers whittled down or otherwise preoccupied the Chrysanthemum's fighter force leaving a variety of openings in the Matsuda's defensive cover for KNF bombers to exploit.

While the Matsumoto was withstanding a heavy beating from the guns of its older sister, it was plain that the Matsuda was slowly being whittled away as its shields began to fail and the very same engine design flaws that had rendered it immobile in KNF service were now exploited by bomber wings to once again cripple the warship.

After several more minutes, the Matsuda's escape pods began to eject from the ailing battleship, picked up by Chrysanthemum fighters as they fled deeper into the Seiran dust cloud. It didn't take long thereafter for the ship's powercore to falter and fail completely, culminating in a vast explosion that reportedly almost turned night to day on the dark side of Planet Kyushu, if only for a split second.

Matsumoto itself sustained moderate damage in the engagement, relatively untouched by Chrysanthemum bombers however still suffering the ill effects of Matsuda's anti-capital weaponry. Despite its damage, it remains deployed in the Kyushu system to continue the blockade of the cardamine trade and to serve as a show of force to any who would challenge the might of the Emperor.

[832 AS] Kusari's Plight

KAGOSHIMA -- 832 AS -- Synth Foods audacity knows no bounds. They use a time of tragedy as an opportunity to bloat their already bloated purses with more ill-gotten wealth. We cannot allow this. There can be no room for Synth in Kusari. They already control too great a share of the market and with Kyushu's food production on a downward spiral after the storm, our intervention is necessary now more than ever. We must commit ourselves fully to our mission for the greater interests of Kusari unless we wish to live under the jackboot of Liberty and its vile corporate interests!

[832 AS] Counting Doses

ROCHESTER -- 832 AS -- The catastrophic crash of the Cardamine market has been tough for all the associates involved in the chain of its distribution, and the substantial drop-off in the quantity of it available for use and resale has caused a new problem in this series of bad episodes. The Rogues and Hackers, former partners in feeding the needs of the underworld are now at each other's throats, unable to meet demands for the drug both by their own and by customers, it seems as if stealing it from each other at gunpoint is the new business model.

[832 AS] ALG pose unexpected threat

KAGOSHIMA DEPOT -- 832 -- The blow dealt to the Liberty intruders on Roppongi Station was a great victory for the people of Kusari. Roppongi peddled foreign filth to New Tokyo’s youth, contaminating them with Synth Paste and Cardamine. Unfortunately, this great victory now poses a threat to our future. ALG Waste Disposal is currently negotiating for a contract to decontaminate and dismantle the wreckage. Our benefactors have advised that this operation could reveal the source of the fissile material used in the attack. This is unacceptable for our long term objectives, and must be prevented at all costs. ALG must now be considered a priority target across Kusari.

[831 AS] Jump Hole Upheaval Causes Chaos

HEISENBERG -- 831 AS -- Jump holes across Sirius have become increasingly volatile and chaotic over the last year, with Professor Sophia Nagel from the Heisenberg Research Station linking the unusual phenomena to the Pulse. The Pulse was an unprecedented blast of hyperspace energy that was detected immediately prior to last year's jump gate Blackout.

Professor Nagel and her team are certain the Pulse originated from outside Sirius, but are otherwise no closer to identifying its source or mitigating a future Blackout event. "Following the Blackout, we began to see immediate signs of jump hole destabilization in multiple different regions, with many ultimately falling out of phase alignment altogether", she commented. The dramatic upending of Sirius' jump hole network has already prompted many groups to abandon stations and withdraw from systems that appear to risk being cut off.

While months-long trips between the stars are possible thanks to the Liberty Engine and many centuries of innovation, few ships are designed or provisioned to make such arduous journeys. Those who were displaced by Sirius' redrawn map hope that system connections will return, while adventurers and explorers rush to discover new routes.

[828 AS] Birds of a Feather

STUTTGART -- 828 AS -- Many of the LWB’s remnants took up the Imperial cause during the Civil War, hoping for an isolationist government that would expel Synth Foods from Rheinland. These pilots were left feeling betrayed and enraged when this failed to happen. Lacking funding and resources, they looked abroad to find support. An unexpected benefactor was found in Kusari’s Farmer’s Alliance, who fight a near identical battle against the Liberty corporation. The Alliance has provided leadership, funding and resources to relaunch anti-Synth operations in Rheinland as a wing of their own organization. It remains to be seen how this united Farmers Alliance will impact affairs on the wider stage, with the security forces of both Rheinland and Kusari already strained by internal conflict and crime.

[825 AS] Ibusuki station massacred - Kusari enters war!

SAIGON -- 825 -- In a furious speech, Prime Minister Yukihara Reijiro of Kusari has declared a state of war against Rheinland. This follows the destruction of Ibusuki Survey Platform in Sigma-21, 12 hours before Rheinland's eviction ultimatum expired. Despite Rheinland's protests that it was not responsible for the act, Kusari has accused the Battleship Bayern of the murders, releasing the station's final distress calls that begged Rheinland forces to cease fire. As a result, Kusari has mobilized the Kusari Naval Forces to begin joint military operations alongside the Gas Miner's Guild. The Prime Minister has ordered Rheinland to withdraw all of its forces from the Sigmas immediately or face Kusari's fury.

[801 AS] Kusari imposes embargo on Rheinland

NEW TOKYO -- 801 -- Shogun Edo has announced that a full economic embargo of Rheinland will be imposed by Kusari due to the outrages of the Colony Wars. Liberty’s President Jacobi has taken a leading role in mediation between Rheinland and the other Houses, with the Provisional Rheinland Government offering a message of condolence to the Kusari people for the actions of the toppled previous regime. Despite this, Kusari has remained resolute that no normalization of relations will be considered until full reparations are made for the devastation in Honshu and New Tokyo, and the many crimes Kusari alleges were perpetrated there.

Rumors

Farmers Alliance
  • We use this base to attack Synth Food convoys in Shikoku and Tokyo. There are Jump Holes near both systems. Sometimes the council of elders orders us to attack Kishiro Consumer Goods transports, or even Optical Chips. We do what we are told; that is the traditional Kusari way.

  • Some people say that we are just puppets of Samura. It is true that Samura financially supports our cause, and tells us whom and where to strike next. But we still can decide for ourselves if we want to continue doing this. We are all volunteers to the cause. With our beloved Emperor exiled in Bretonia, the cause is more just than ever before.

  • We recently reached out to our likeminded dissidents in House Rheinland and struck an agreement. They found that our movement was essentially an umbrella they could act under, and we agreed to support them in tackling Synth. Together, I feel we will do a better job in curtailing those foul people and their so called product.

  • We have been able to find many eager recruits in Kyushu. The factories are empty and the fields lay fallow in Kyushu because of the foreigners. Kishiro uses Gaijin labor at Deshima to manufacture its Consumer Goods, products that were once made by Kyushu craftsmen. Now this new government wants to be even more open to gaijin trade and influence? The people of Kusari are being misled, if they knew what was happening on Kyushu they would take up arms as we have. It was only out of fear of Gallia that the people abandoned their traditions. Once Gallia is no longer a threat, the people will do what is right, and restore the Emperor to his throne. Then things will be set right once and for all.

  • We are the unemployed farmers of the garden planet of Kyushu. Our families have toiled for generations, producing Food for all of Kusari. Synth Foods has destroyed our traditional way of life in 10 years. They must be stopped. It's foreign corporations like Synth that has led to this new government destroying our traditions. Kusari is fast becoming a cheap copy of Liberty, and this cannot stand!

  • The Kusari government should not allow lower quality imports that threaten the farmers' traditional way of life. Before Synth Foods was allowed into Kusari, we could charge a premium price for our Rice and Produce. Now all of the Tokyo urbanites prefer cheap Synth Paste. Let us hope that our new line of produce from Tottori will win them over.

  • I expected our benefactors might take offense to our initiative of linking up with other farmers, but they were actually supportive. They must realize it's simply more efficient this way.

  • I hear that our equipment and supplies are paid for by some mysterious benefactor in Shinjuku. It's a good thing we have someone with money willing to fight the foreigners and the government. Sometimes they ask us to raid Kishiro storage depots, which used to trouble me. We don't see ourselves as common thieves, like the Hogosha, but this new government is an affront to everything our ancestors built for us.

  • Samura has been very good to us. They built the factories in Kyushu, provided us with special Seeds and Fertilizers, and even provided special Samura Bank loans to my family. We drive a Samura XCV series personal craft, of course.

  • We get all of our supplies from Kabukicho in the Kanto Field of the New Tokyo system. Those Hogosha seem dishonest, but they are friends of Samura, so I guess they must be okay.
