FLAK turrets are dumbfire proximity charges. You fire them in the general direction of where you think a fighter is heading to, preferably in groups. When a charge detonates, it typically detonates any others in it's vicinity as well, so the damage can add up. Several things to consider with flaks:
- Aiming with the crosshair is disabled for this weapon because the game thinks the weapon is guided. Manual aim is needed.
- It has a HUGE proximity radius, meaning anything coming close to the round will detonate it. This includes small asteroids, big asteroids, fighter mines, and some ordnance.
- It is a severe friendly fire risk.
- Doing blast damage, it will damage all systems on a craft it hits when the craft's shields are down. It will also quickly destroy equipment and pods dropping out of destroyed NPCs.
- It's blast will throw a smaller craft off course briefly.
- FLAKs are difficult to use in asteroid fields since the roids will detonate the charges.
- It does not have a very good range.
The issue of no basic flak turrets existing will be tackled in 4.86.
