Guard systems are fine. They ain't closed down military zones, unless the owning factions declare em as such. Take the Zoner and IMG guard systems for one - I believe those are open to traders. (not that there's much to buy). In general, as long as you are respectful of the owning faction I doubt you'll have much of a problem in them.

Minnesota and Baffin are good examples of "guard" systems. The problem are those with a single little station in the middle of the map and absolutely no other purpose. It sucks and it's a waste of systems that could be much more interesting.

Interestingly though, Vesspuci, Duesseldorf and Saar, which were supposed to play an important part in the Rheinland-Liberty war as backdoor entries for both Liberty and Rheinland which the LSF were (supposed to) actively search for actually seem to lose their roleplay purpose in .86: the Duesseldorf/Vesspuci Jumphole closes, Saar's jumpholes realign to connect closer to the Hessians' guard system.
And yet we're still stuck with asteroid fields on both exits to Vespucci.:(
Though, I do hope to try and open up Vespucci a bit to other factions. Possibly Planetform and the IMG, maybe others. It wouldn't be wrong to expect the possibility of a non-Legion base in the system in a later version(Or possibly even in 4.86, what with the whole station building thing).
I want it to be less of a Guard system and more of just a system.
