It's confusing now. Maybe we should bring this old issue up again, as we are about to get some new players (I hope):

- Names issue: ore comparing to refined materials prices

Some solutions I'd suggest, just to start some discussion:

1) If we keep current names, share some idea how to explain why cargo unit of ore is so expensive comparing to same unit of refined materials.
2) Maybe refined materials simple shall not be available if ore is, to avoid ore/refined prices confusion.
3) Maybe refined materials just shall get renamed to some kind of refining waste, like Diamond dust, Hydrocarbon gas, Gold dross....

Hey, if we do ^this, one day we could introduce new refining module, mountable on larger mining ships. PoBs could make modules, modules could refine specific ore only, some bases wouldn't be able to make modules available for competitive companies, etc... Why modules? More RP!

If module not equipped (gold example):
- miner gets Gold ore, as always. He can mine ore for trader ship, as always

If module equipped:
- miner gets 1 Gold and 1 Gold dross per EACH Ore, until cargo fills up with both
or...
- if mining for trader, trader gets Gold only, miner gets Gold dross only. Plus payment from trader.

Gold should cost much more than Ore, Ore should cost more than Dross, ofc.

I would love to see Refineries actually operate as refineries - accepting mined ores and churning out refined materials that could be sold at a more profitable rate.

Maybe if NPC bases could be coded to operate a bit like PoBs - the refined materials are empty until they are loaded with ores...and which point they start creating them the same way a PoB eats through materials to make equipment. Maybe even have it somewhere between 1-5 ores to create 1 unit of refined material, depending on the size of the refinery and the type of material being processed.
