Never been per account, though empty ones do get removed. And if you have one or two chars hanging
around that slipped through the net, count yourself lucky, it does occasionally miss the odd one.

They are all over 20 days old and all come from still active accounts. Some of these characters I haven't used in a little while but some of them more frequently then my active chars now. I'd appreciate any help.

Those 4 characters has gone to the eternal bitbucket in the stars. They are no more. Nor will they be restored.
They were not deleted due to the error on the server which this thread is about. They were wiped by the automated inactivity wipe, which began running again on the 3'rd of January, after more than a week of advance notice on the forums.
The characters you specified above had not been online since mid September and start of October - More than 50 days of inactivity on the character, and it is gone. For good. Remember, it is not enough just to refresh one character on an account. ALL characters on the account needs to be refreshed. Its an inactive characterwipe, not an inactive accountwipe.
Although that's certainly possible it's been since October, I remember using one of those characters in December so it still seems strange. That said I also don't have the best memory. I'm also a bit confused. How do you know this info Arms and Legs Guy? It doesn't say you're an Admin or a Moderator but you have access to my accounts?
If there is no way to restore the characters then there is no way but....
Is there a way I can make a financial contribution to Discovery in exchange for keeping all my characters active from now on? I was thinking $20 USD/year or 2 years would be fair but I don't know all the costs involved in running the server so I am flexible with this.
A&L is -the- server guy, without him it would not have a home. He is the man who can physically look at
the box everyday, and his participation is invaluable. He is the man who allows us a huge and completely
uninterrupted up and download, so you can play for free here.
And he sweeps the floors for beer ...
If he says they got wiped because of inactivity, believe me, they did. They have gone to the great cloud
of internet ether in the sky. They cannot be restored, the information does not exist any more.
Financially you can contribute to the paypal account that goes towards hard and software upgrades when
needed, but that is entirely voluntary, and gets you no special treatment.
The accounts are yours and your responsibility alone unfortunately, just like every other single player
here ...

Fair Enough. Maybe Igiss and the team should look at this. It would definitely get some money flowing your way. I'd rather pay a little money rather than having to worry about logging into every character at certain intervals.
Arms and Legs: Sorry didn't realize you were the server guy. It looked like you were just a guy with a
two month old account making posts.

Paying money in order to get added perks won't happen on GC. Igiss has stated that before, and even elaborated on it. Donations are appreciated, but will never give any extra benefits on the server.
DiscoveryGC is run as a labour of love, just like the Discovery Mod is developed as a labour of love.
The server will not require payments in any form to DiscoveryGC, in order to be able to play on it, at least not on my watch.
There is reasons, both technical as well as non-technical, for the requirement to keep your characters active. The technical ones are that inactive characters take up space on the harddrive, AND more importantly prolong the FLserver startup time, since FLserver reads all accounts and characters upon a restart.
The non-technical ones are among other things, that inactive characters do not interact with other players. This server is all about interacting with each other, and thereby making a community. Having characters not being active for 50 days, means they pretty much are dead within the scope of the roleplaying environment, and therefore aren't beneficial to the community, and the spirit behind the creation of the community.
And I am just a guy with a two month old account making posts - But I am also the guy that sweeps the server room floor, which should be indicated by among other things my signature graphics, and previous posts in the server announcement section. You do remember to read that section, right ?
I figured you might mention your signature. I was on my mobile in full browser zoomed in so missed that. Hoping you wouldn't point that out.
I carry a lot of characters so I have them for different situations. As you might imagine although I want to have a lot of characters TO use, I don't have as much time to play games as I would like sometimes and use them all frequently...and I thought it was per account and not per character.
Last time there was a character wipe and people were complaining (and I can find the post somewhere I'm sure) one of the admins pointed out that we don't pay for for the storage so we can't complain about inactive character wipes. All I am saying is that I am willing to pay for it.

Not going to happen since paying for storage won't solve the issue of FLserver's restart time. Move along. Nothing to see here.
If you build a time machine and travel to the future and bring back the technology to improve Flserver's restart time, I would like you to let me know.
