The Temporary Autonomous Zoners have just submitted a request in the Developer's Forum. A copy of it is displayed in the second post. Please share your own views on the subject.
The Temporary Autonomous Zoners request that all three of Baffin's Alien Organisms mining fields become operational again.
We've been submitting requests for the Alien Organism mining fields in Baffin be fixed, since they're now not working, but it has only been recently that Echo told us that this is because Sedona Station buys them.
First of all, this has been like this since always and nobody ever complained about it, since the profit made by this mining activity is so low that it's practice is only encouraged to increase activity in the system, which has always been one of TAZ goals, and never to promote profiteering.
Second, even if you insisted that there can be no field of certain commodity in the same system as that commoditie's sale point, you'd have to take into account that Sedona Station is not inRP a sale point, but a production facility. If the dev team decides to do someting about there being a sale point were there are fields, Sedona Station should stop buying the Alien Organisms and reflect what it is (a miner support facility as Fujisawa in Okinawa), and the fields should return.
We'll take care of the production by interacting with other factions who can come and mine them, and we'll take care of their distribution by interacting with our business partners and other traders using our own PoB in the Nebula, Brunswick Shrine.
The system of Baffin is an relatively old system, with several terrestrial and gas giant planets around its main star. Situated on the very border of the Barrier Nebula, with large quantities of mineable water and other important resources thus ideal for settlement. The system was explored by a loose organization of Zoners, later known as being one of the few esoteric cults in Sirius, the Temporary Autonomous Zoners.
Several stations are known to exist within the extension of the Barrier Nebula that crosses the system, as well as some special mining ships. Docking rights to the aforementioned stations should be requested to the Temporary Autonomous Zoners.
Sedona Station is the collection point for the small proto-nomad "Scrubbies" discovered in the Devon Ice Cloud by a Zoner explorer. These fish-like organisms have the ability to consume inorganic matter, and convert it to organic compounds and breathable gases such as oxygen and nitrogen. Thus, they are valuable as self-contained "terraforming machines".
Why do you need 3 mining spots for this in one system? I could see room for one....
If anything, why don't you rework the whole "easterly" sector of that system so that there is only 1 mining field instead of 3, and adjust the price/availability accordingly? You could also give those fields a lower drop rate to curb profiteering.
Yeah well, there's the main one and one really far south and another really far north. They've always been there, but I guess we could do with the main one only. Since we have a PoB in the main one, and despite the base is friendly to all, it would be nice that there was at least a second field for people who want to develop their own independent mining apart from that of TAZ and it's would be associates.

Except that, as we've seen in the case of Omega-7, separate mining fields for every interested party prevents competition (you know...the SPICE of RP). I'd like to see groups actually competing for resources rather than having them handed to them left and right.
Also....would you kindly have the POB removed from close to the mining field, maybe at least a good 15-30K away? Or maybe even have it moved to the edge of the nebula?
I don't see why this is necessary. There are plenty of bases in mining fields, but let's not compare alien organism mining with higher tier mineables. Let's compare it with lower tier mineables which is what Alien Organisms are. There are even NPC bases IN the fields for some of those.
It's not the quality of the mine-able commodity that makes PoBs near mining fields a problem. It's the fact that it provides simply too close a safe-haven for miners in the field, especially if it has defense platforms. Same reason folks don't like PoBs that block/guard jumpholes and jump gates. It ruins interaction possibilities and piracy.
Well I dunno if you were around when Malaclypse Freeport was on it's feet, but the choice of not putting this new base near the holes and not giving it any turrets at all was a result of our bad experience with that old base, which blocked the T29 hole.
About safe haven of the miners in the field, well, if this wasn't TAZ guard system and if piracy was not forbidden in Baffin, I'd probably agree with you, but this is not the case.

I remember Malaclypse, and I think it's GOOD when PoB owners have the forethought not to put them near mining spots, jumpholes, gates, etc.
the Guard system idea is more/less dead in 4.87. You're certainly free to treat it as such, but that doesn't mean you should get the right to give yourselves a prime mining spot AND make yourselves immune to piracy all in one fell swoop.
Also...saying piracy is forbidden and actually preventing it from happening yourselves through enforcement are two different things.
Hint: Hit a pob with a cd.. I have pirated a lot of times already under the eyes of station turrets. We are all able to do, it just needs the right motivation for people to dare trying. Or in the process end up dying
