Do you considering an option, to become "friends" with some of unlawfull factions for obtaining their tech after permission?
Just, for an instance- Firstly, you flying with civil or BW GB, and getting on with unlawfull faction, and eventualy, becoming a valuable friend. Then, your GB is dramaticaly damaged and so on.... and you requesting permission to purchase factional ship. This might cost you a bit more, but money is very least problem in this game.

I think he is looking on this from PvP side, not RP side.

But aren't most of the ship has their own disadvantages and advantages in fighting, their own tacticks, and right or wrong weapon setup? It's rly big deal, what ship you are flying? The big deal, how you do it.

He is a good GB pilot, but anyway. He is seeking another good GB for pirate id (with at least 75%, i think).
Don't you get difference between heavy, light gunboats? Also different shapes etc.

Actualy, I already said it:

You can beat heavy GB with light one, with right tactick, weapons and....skills (which comes after first two factors). In same time, you won't even break sheilds to heavy GB, if you do completely wrong things, with wrong weaponry. So, I think, that I made it pretty clear.
Just same way it was in 86. Famouse BAF Dessy vs GRN Cruiser. In classic combat, Bret Dessy would eat GRN Cruiser without effort, due to many reasons. So,for GRN's Cruisers, the option was- run and fire missiles. It was lame tactick, but usefull in same time.

Then probably the GRN cruiser pilots were newbs that fell in love with the ship and had the urge to buy it.
Im not saying I'm the best, but I'm damn sure I can take on a Dessy in a GRN cruiser
And to the discussion - my personal favorite GBs are the BW GB, rogue, civ and the gallic. im not including the Bottlenose because i don't think pirates are allowed in it.
I would use a Tridente for pirating and such too, its pretty cool
