The map should have an icon that resembles the Russian socialist symbol. When you click it, all the minable areas should go brown. Go there and shoot the rocks with mining turrets, mining faction ID and a mining ship.
The best areas are in Dublin (gold ore), Omega-7 (silver, platinum and cobalt ore), Omega-11 (uncut diamonds), Tau-23 (niobium ore, I think) and Okinawa (helium-3 (has really small mining fields, only a few K around some gas miners)). I've heard that Gallia has a good spot too, perhaps the best of them.

Utterly useless and mean-spirited post that does nothing to help a person that simply needs a bit of advice...
Okay I will check those areas. I have miner ID and miner ship (hedgmon) and so far a lot of areas give me nothing. I also hit the mining tab to show the mining spots. Also, don't I need a special ship to gather helium-3? And what is a trader guild as far as how it works, benefits, etc? Thanks

I have tried mining in other systems and I get nothing. I blow up the floating rocks, nothing ends up in my cargo.
Thats probably because the mining bonuses for Miner IDs vary and many of them are in the next to useless category, except for helium of course.
Create a new character and restart it as a particular mining faction (use /showrestarts to see whats available), DSE can mine platinum for example and BMM berylium or gold, there are quite a lot of mining factions out there that have different mining bonuses, IMG, Kruger and so on, see what satisfies you and keep it running.
The miner ID will only get your so much for your buck. Tlhat's why many have to upgrade to other ID's to mine in other fields, because while there may be ore in that field, say the fields in Dublin? Only IMG, BMM and Mollys get a bonus on them
The fields in the Tau's? Mostly only Gallic Corps, IMG and a rare few can get them. Omega 7? Kruger, Daumman and IMG only. Uncut Diamonds? Hessians and Daumman only.
Only some fields will take some ID's, heck even some fields require a name tag, such as GMG?
A ship with GMG| tag, GMG ID and a GMG mining ship get a large bonus in the fields where only GMG (and others) can mine. Miner ID gets a massive bonus on only the Helium field in Penny, nothing much else, ya they can mine else where but they don't get the massive multiplier like other fields server side.
Sadly you will need to upgrade your ID, I enjoy mining on my GMG ship, my mere 3.5k space ship goes for about 9.75 million on the GMG PoB in Okinawa but it takes time to mine it.
I personally would try to sign up for some things to get money. Such as back in the day, Solar Runners were tasked to getting remains for IC| (this was about 2 years ago people..) and we got 350k per fighter, 5 million per GB and about 40 million per battleship and we brought these to IC| in bulk, made about a billion the first week when we did it in numbers
Another good way is joining say Congress or IMG, both of which do massive convoys through out the map and give you a good buck for your penny, even some RP is possible with each.
If you like hunting for your money, trade up for a warship and then run missions against capital ships, those are also profitable (abit deadly sometimes), or even code wreck hunting, there used to be someone here on the server called Cody who sold Codename weapons and other cool things in bulk and got rich rather fast and a ton of other cool things on the side
Don't like mining or hunting? There is always...yes (sigh) jump trading. While many say its stupid and dumb, I can note that its an amazingly good way to make cash fast between two locations and with friends.
Another way is PoB construction. YES I KNOW THE HATE YOU CAN GET FROM THIS. Anyways, with the proper diplomatic wave of your hand and trading rights, you can turn your base from something small into a traders daydream or an outlawed black market. Sure it takes time to build them, but people normally with successful bases will always get a good amount of cash for their hard work.
Even if those don't work out, there's freelancing jobs, such as bounty hunting or escorting. Players will pay to keep their stuff safe or their enemies at bay for hard working PvP'ers. Some even more then others.
Personally I do my money making like this
I jump on my GMG indy miner and load Shuri base with H-3. I then transfer my money I made from that to another transport near by and buy some of the H-3 off Shuri base and transport it to the IMG shipyard in Omega 3, a full 5k'er of H-3 to Aland goes for about 40 million off the bat. Then I take Robotics from there to the Zoner planet in Omega 49, from there, Deuterium to the Freeport in Omicron Delta. Then Iridium back to the GMG home planet in Okinawa and I repeat the process. One way, I make about 48-54 million and it never takes longer then about fifteen minutes to move between locations. Within an hour you can make almost 240 million
However if you think this sounds like a good trade off, its highly unsafe as I normally travel through Hessian, Corsair, Order, Core and many other people's space, including the Omicrons where indy nomads can get the silent blue on me. I still take the risk regardless but if you want something safe? Do what IC and other Lib corps used to do. Save up, get a barge, fill said barge with ore, get jump permission, jump said ore filled barge between point A and point B, make about 1.5 billion one way. Its incredibly safe as well for the most part, unless people want to get the drop on you.
If you need help finding some routes, I'd join a corporation primary faction for good ones. I also joined IC, EFL as primaries and GMG, Zoners (Yes I trade on a Zoner..) and Dragons for other routes and good trade ways. IC used to jump trade all the time and we also got some good deals in the under and overworld (hint hint) that make good money. EFL trade and mine almost safely because no one gives two damns about Gallia for some reason (trade and pirate wise). GMG also is a good one if you wish to test your mining and defense skills (So close to enemy space). Zoners can trade in a somewhat good way to. Dragons also have good routes with Hessians and Junkers to.

This is my...50 cents on this subject anyways
Wow thanks for the long and detailed reply. I wish they had a page that lists all the freelancer acronyms lol. Also, I keep seeing roughly the same kinda ships wherever I go, and I do not even attempt at looking at the guides on here anymore as so far they have all been mostly dead wrong and wasted a lot of my time, like travelling the universe for a ship I want, only to get there and the base does not even have it, etc. But I think ill start a new char with gmg first and come back to your guide off and on. Thanks a ton I appreciate it!

If you want to get an idea of which ship you want, use the Wiki, but keep in mind that most of the information in the Wiki is regarding the 4.87 or earlier versions of those ships. Don't rely on the Wiki for where ships are sold because many of the selling locations have been changed -- use Freelancer Companion to get current locations for where to buy ships.
