From what I can tell you can't actually go over the 2bil limit by selling cargo/weapons etc. And even adding small amounts via hook won't affect it either. However your cash does change to 0 if you try to set cash to more than 2,147,483,647. Why? idk. numbers and stuff.
Basically 2,147,483,647 is the max size a variable can get in many languages, go over that and it goes to -2,147,483,647, and since you can't have negative credits in this game it corrupts the file i guess(maybe, i don't know freelancer code), sure there are ways to get past this, and these days languages often have simple inbuilt ways to do so, but it is likely that the original devs figured no player would ever even reach that amount of credits, which makes sense considering the value of ships and such in vanilla.
It's actually really complex, lots of advanced maths and computer jargon, go google it.

As others have said just don't do it. Also keep in mind I believe it counts the value of anything on or equipped on the ship so be careful if you are keeping a lot of codes on a ship or some spare cap armors not to keep a ton of money on the ship.
