So, after playing another game (Elite: Dangerererer) I realized something.
in Elite, shields are optional there. While it would serve no purpose here (as in Elite shieldless builds are mostly used to keep a small thermal profile, and as such used to smuggle past patrols) I was thinking about something.
Shields are clearly a critical part of the game, and not having one would be a short death by anything (flight, docking, PvP, PvE, sitting in space), but what if we had the option to replace the shield on ships, for another type of buff? For example, a Shieldless LF wouldn't last anywhere without the upgrade, but what if it could fit a larger powercore, or even a larger engine, making it faster? What if a transport could forgo it's shield for an extra cargo pod, giving it extra cargo?What if a Battleship dropped it's shield for a huge powercore, making it fire near forever?
In short, dropping shields on Disco is a death sentence, but it shouldn't be. Maybe have some buffs that affects the ship in other ways?
Dropping the shield could fit many things, such as (but not limited to):
Larger engines (and as such faster ships)
More Armor (ever put a UAU8 on a UAU8?)
More restocks (Bots/Batts, CD/AuxGunAmmo, Cloak batteries, Torpedoes, etc.)
Additional Scanners (put a ADS on top of a Cargo scanner)
Larger/faster powercores (firing your weapons longer/from empty to full a second faster)
Additional Cargo (Ever wanted 6k cargo space?)
Other grades of shields (Small capacity, fast recharge (this is the snub variant of transport shields)
(this is the insane choice) MicroCloak (A small cloak that lasts only twenty seconds, only costs ~50mil, let's you sneak past the blockade (barely), barely escape from a fight.

People with missiles are salivating at this post. Shields are a critical part of this game. To do what you suggested is not in Light of what Freelancers foundation is on... This is not elite dangerous mate sorry.

But I think, that there is some sense in that idea. Maybe, when you take off the shields, you become less, let's name that, VISIBLE? For example, without shields you can be detected only at 5-6K. Smuggle become more complicated and action, I think.

It needs FlHook. Clone Alley first. And don't forget to ask her for permission before attempting to do so.
Energy consuming shields for caps which would make it veeeeeeery unpleasant to shoot, but increasing your tanking abilities could be a crucial move in some scenarions tho.
