Hi, can someone explain the bounty system to me please, I'm new.
The reason I'm asking is I was flying my new indy BAF char in a bomber through Dublin when a Sabre with a Mercenary ID disrupted me, started talking and then opened fire. I first thought he'd made a mistake attacking me so being right next to the Hood I docked and asked why I was attacked. He claimed there was a bounty against me, then changed it and said it was against my 'type'.
I'm guessing this means bountys can be just general rather than against an individual as I had assumed - is this right? And a Mercenary ID can attack anyone at will, because I guess there must a bounty against pretty much every faction somewhere or other?
I'm not complaining, just trying to make sure I understand the rules.

Official factions may bounty general IDs/factions. Such as a bounty on all BAF tagged/ID'd ships, or a bounty on all people doing X action (such as smuggling). Non-official factions and individuals may only bounty specific people, and I think on certain groups. Such as a bounty on a player faction (like BAF|). This type of bounty means anyone can collect on the people in the player faction, but it does not mean they may collect on people using the BAF ID, unless they are tagged BAF|.
In this case, there are several bounties on BAF ID'd ships, which is why he attacked you.
Ok, thanks for the replies - that makes sense now.
I didn't fire a single shot in return because i was convinced they were attacking me in error as being new I was sure there couldn't be a bounty against me personally. Now I understand there are far more broad-ranging bounties, I'll be more careful.
Just out of interest, because I didn't know what was going on I immediately docked - can the mercenary claim their bounty with me docking (I believe docking in a PvP counts as a death) or do they actually have to destroy my ship?
