Whilst we're looking at magic armor and magic shields to fix things in combat right up let's give a think to a fun concept.
I dunno about you chaps, but there's been a time or two in my day where I've thought it'd be darn nice to be not exactly where I am now but maybe somewhere a bit further away.
Years later we've varied cruise speed. Which is epic. But imagine if you could push the red button and push the cruise of your fatty slave liner, battletard or pirate boomer to the same speed as a lf for a nice little burst.
So what say you're doing your thing, figure your thing would be greatly aided by smashing said little red button. Your cruise speed is boosted for a couple o moments, then your poor cruise engine gets snapped off for the equivalent of a nice cd strike.
Quick burst, nice for a final approach or an emergency push. Issues that come to mind would be ensuring that the boosted speed isn't paired with ek for maximum trollz.

I've had that same thought. If I am chasing a ship who is just out of range, I'd like to be able to divert my weapons energy into the engine and get a little turbo going. It would have to be percentage based to be fair, of course, something like 10% every 1 second of boost. And then you decelerate to the stock speed right after.
make that thing and you will never stop taders running from you to base. ships now are fast, more then enough. I dont see need in this. if you will not increasy systems size by 1.5-2x dont even touch speed
In the spirit of adding ideas for discussion, what if the cruise speed limitation is actually based on structural stability? What if you could choose your cruise speed, but the higher above the class' limit would cause more structural damage, ie hull damage? It'd be neat to see a smuggler flying by at twice its normal speed but crumbling its hull in the process.
When you activate it, the turboengine
Some stuff is disabled
Eg
thruster, CM, guns, etc becomes unusable
Until boost is off. And no kill engine/float is usable
