Maybe I'm wrong on this, but if my memory serves me right the admins/mods used to make a lot of post invisible and close threads a lot, which they didn't for a while when they were light on staff, and now it's just back to normal.
Fundamentally most of us grew up with strong ideological views on freedom of speech and thus feel "violated" when threads get closed and posts made invisible, but i start to think that it's a good thing that more discussions are shut down earlier on. It moves the focus from bickering to what this server really should be about, namely roleplay and fun.
Some of the pointless threads I have personally argued viciously in could easily have been locked or made invisible, and for the better really. I know I'm very guilty of forum PVP, but really we should be doing the fightin' in our little pixel ships.
Except that a person shouldn't be punished just for trying to express his views in his own thread.
If somebody comes into somebody else's thread talking trash and starting arguments, that person's posts should be made invisible but the entire thread should not be closed.
Kaz, there was (IMO) an important discussion of the rules going on in that thread. A little bit of bickering happened and you locked it? *Sigh* Well I guess Saronsen and Haste win the argument because their thread derailment got it locked. Since we can't talk about it anymore, it will fall to the depths of obscurity, and those (namely me) arguing to have the rules changed have effectively lost.
I have to say I agree with the general sentiment of this thread.

But to be fair, I was going to spiderman the hell out of that thread until it was otherwise impossible for me to do so.
Saronsen, you're going on my ignore list as well. I'm tired of your crap. I didn't flame anyone; you and Haste did, because you couldn't counter my logic and you just wanted the thread to die.
My argument was that the nomad ID gives them an unfair pvp advantage, and that there was no reason for it; logic, lore, or otherwise. Either the nomads should have to rp like everyone else, or everyone else should be just as free to engage the nomads.
Haste came back with
Quote:My Nomad can't fly a Zoner whale. My repsheet also isn't as good as the average Zoner's.
So unfair.
Again: Zoners =/= Nomads.
This is ad hominem. He is attempting to discredit my argument based on the irrelevant fact that I play Zoner. Nothing of what I said had to do with the Zoners specifically; the Corsairs, Hessians, and other factions that fly in the Omicrons are in the same boat. So yeah, I got a little miffed at him. Not thread-lock levels of miffed, though.
Then you piped in with some snarky remark about ignoring people who have better arguments than me, despite the fact that Haste did not present a counter-argument.
I then challenged you to come up with a reason why the noms should have this advantage. What did you come back with?
Quote:Here's a good one.
Because the admins have decided otherwise, bam.
Also the Order and Bounty Hunters can attack the Nomads freely. If you want to do that, get an Order or BHG Core ID.
The Order can use more Juggies.
To paraphrase, 'Because the admins say so, deal with it' and 'so pick another faction'. Again, flaming, not a counter-argument.
And then,
Quote:You hath summoned the Tel-Aviv with your generic 'why don't zoners get X' and general flaming of everything non-zoner.
Time for this thread to die.
More ad hominem. More derailment. And please, point out exactly where I flamed anything.
I was trying to have a discussion. You know, that process where we weigh the pros and cons of the subject and make a decision for the betterment of the mod. You two couldn't come up with a good reason for the imbalance, and so you decided to troll and derail the thread so it would get locked. Don't even try to pin that on me, I won't let you get away with it.
spidermanning a thread should not get it locked - the offending posts need only be redacted, with a warning to the offenders - or a short forumlancer holiday for habitual recidivists.
@ Trogdor. Antics is a much better word than the one you used, as it it both less flamey, and also nicely conveys a suitable modicum of implied immaturity. trolls are fairly easy to deal with - without feeding they wither away and search for easier prey.
