This thread has just been started and will be reviewed periodically.
I hope these Q&A's can be helpful. It goes a but more in-depth than the FAQ.
Be sure to check out Sindroms Tutorial(s) too.
People with questions (mostly myself for now) Wrote:1. Is there any major factions that don't require skype?
I know skype is important, but I don't really use it, that's mainly why I indie.
Not really. Check before you begin writing your story to a certain faction, if you absolutely don't want to use skype.
2. Would it be silly to make a 'punching in/punching out' thread for when I 'go to work'?
I thought I'd might do this with one of my indie miners, so transporters, security and pirates know when there's activity.
If you want friendly activity, yes. If you're want to be stealthy it's obviously not.
3. How would I go about donating to an official faction?
Since I'm using an official IFF/ID but I indie, I want to pay some dues to that faction. How would I go about that? Do an iRP contact?
Are you sure you want to do that? Then post an iRP message.
4. Would it better to make a forum profile for each char I RP or does it increase workload on admins and servers?
I want to give my characters more depth and avoid an 'umbrella' name like this.
If you have some characters you consider long-term RP projects, it can be a good idea.
Don't make one for each character you make or use the different profiles for power/metagaming.
5. Touchy subject, but how far do you go iRP before you report?
Is it better to write a lot of // messages ingame or just report and leave the work to the moderators. I don't like to report people, but I dont want to be some sort of in-game lawman either, that's why I ask. I'll say in advance, I've never reported anyone or threatened to do so, still learning myself.
Uhm.. Ehrr. Try to handle it calmly on the spot, it's ok to use // to avoid any confusion. Be sure that you know the rules before you report and don't report out of anger alone.
Consider how harmful the violation is. Don't report minor or purely accidental violations.
If you decide to report, be sure to collect as much evidence as possible. Best evidence is video or pictures. Fraps or a 3rd party screencapture program is useful, as the standard Print Screen causes your game to lag. DSAce files can also be used, but are not as reliable since it can be manipulated more easily.
Allways remember to wait 10-15 minutes before reporting. The evidence you've collected will still be the same when you've thought it through.
6. Is there a way to moderate the threads you started yourself?
Say, if another user had a question in this thread, could I quote that, edit it into my original post and delete his post to clear up the thread myself? Or should I in that case ask a mod to clear it up or just leave it?
No. If you want a clean thread, you can make a template and ask people nicely to use it.
7: I saw someone with LNF/KNF/RFP tag and Pirate/Freelancer/other ID, is that legal?
Is using a government Navy/Police IFF with non-matching ID against the server rules? And is it considered as falsification of documents iRP?
LawfulIFF/FreelancerID is not against server rules and not illegal iRP, but should have a good reason. Pirates should stay with an unlawful IFF and can get a iRP bounty on their head by the faction the are posing as.
8: When my ID says I can attack to protect friendly, what does that exactly mean?
Is friendly only the top-rated faction in my reputation list? Or is it all factions that says friendly when I move my cursor over their name?
Anyone where it says 'friendly/neutral' in you reputation sheet, not only the ones with the same IFF you are flashing. If you're attacking to protect NPCs, be sure that your ID and ZoI allows it. Remember to allways follow your ID-limitations when you ally with people.
9: Can I just buy reputation with those I want and start shooting to protect all my new friends?
If I want to kill traders and steal their cargo, but do it as a freelancer to keep my back clear, can I just buy some reputation and a cloak, then wait wait for a trader to shoot at my NPC-friend and go 'engaging to protect friendly'?
No. Unless they have the same IFF as your ID, you should not try to protect NPCs.
Only ally with players and remember to check your ID-limitations before you do.

Be responsible about the flexibility offered by unaffiliated, non-faction IDs. It just takes a few high-profile abuses of the Freelancer, Pirate, and (previously) Miner ID for people to take up pitchforks and have them targeted for further restrictions.

Bonus: I've noticed in the techchart that LWB has a VHF and a bomber.
I can't seem to find these on the Wiki. Do these exist or what shipline would a not-so-wealthy LWB indie fly?
They do exist, but can be difficult to find info about. Both can be bought at Eindhoven Depot in Saar.
