I am fine with that, if there is no power nerf with the BAF ID. I think that the BAF should mostly fly Bretonian ships though, but we can make a few exceptions. Would be boring if all our ships were the same, even more if they all looked like creatures made when a desperate shrimp decided to rape a fish (in a cathedral, if we are speaking about the Dunkirk).
I think you could well and easily role-play acquiring a special one. I should first check with the BAF HC, though.
By the way, going to reply your app.

I was thinking of the Zoner Gunboat. I am guessing that a red square means that it is not allowed, though.
We all have an Angelic and a Demonic side. Use of them determines good or evil in the end.
Anything non-civilian/borderworlds, hardly. You'd need to role-play the whole event of capturing it. A tip if you intend to do it: we don't confiscate ships for smuggling here, but we fine them instead, but if they don't pay the fine or even open fire, then you're free to do whatever you want with them.
Oh, and if you wish to see what nerfs, click the link in my last message. 100% means that the energy regeneration is, well, full, no nerf. 90% means that the ship's energy regeneration is on 90% (but the powerplant capacity is always 100%), and so on.
The table has a red tile for Zoner ships with a BAF ID, which means that their energy regeneration is at 10% (haven't missed out a 0; ten).
However, if you role-play it all well, you may apply for a Special Operative ID (which can also function as a BAF ID, or of whichever faction you are in). It has 100% on all ships. It is given by the admins.
But, it often takes long to get it, because the admins are busy and have a real life to live, and then you need to be active with that ship in order to keep it, and things, and complication, and complications, and mess, and muddle. Honestly, I don't recommend it.
The new civilian gunboat is an old Zoner one, though.
Also, note that you can't apply for an official faction with a ship larger than a bomber (but freighters and transports are also allowed). You have to advance to the rank of Lieutenant Commander (3rd rank) in the BAF in order to fly a gunboat.
PS: You asked if it is illegal to fly non-Bretonian ships in Bretonia. It isn't, except if they are made by our enemies, excluding the Pirate Train, which can be used legally.
Also, all capital ships (cruiser and battleship sized; gunboats excluded) flown by foreign blokes are not allowed to cross Bretonian borders, except those of Liberty (allies; but their indies may not stay in Bretonia for long, they may only use it to get to Leeds to pew the Gauls and to resupply), Colonial Republic (same), the Outcasts (neutral; permitted access to Newcastle because they are the Gauls' enemies; shoot them if you see them doing anything illegal; allowed to carry up to 5 units of cardamine) and the Red Hessians (anti-Corsair non-aggression pact (not known to public inRP; Rheinland must not find out); allowed access to Cambridge if there are Corsairs in that system, should leave when the Sairs have been dealt with; their official faction's ( [RHA] ) transports are allowed to trade with Waterloo in New London and are allowed fighter/bomber escorts).
Players in BAF| can request other ships outside the Bretonian ship line here. If you was looking to pilot something else after joining us, I would point you there. From there, the board will discuss and notify you of the decision. The decision made there is final.

No doubt, but I was thinking in terms of RP. It is not uncommon for militaries of the time that Freelancer is modeled after to buy captured ships into service if they were considered to be useful.
The capture, or confiscation, of an intact ship would save the government that cost. My original thoughts had been toward a Borderworlds Gunship confiscated for piracy.
I had, however, given up on the idea. Leaving aside Thunderer's explanation of the requirements, I am a new player, too young for a capitol ship at the moment, and wasn't looking to buck the game when that "young" in the community.
