full screen issues, i can only use window mode

hey i have pretty old laptop hp compaq nx9420. 1.8 dualcore. so i can play in window mode 2000x2000 or 800x600 any resolution actually.. but once i say use full screen game starts up go to server and select ship and bam black screen and i hear everything going in the background but see nothing. another thing i cant go out cause it keeps going back to FL game. not even task manager.. kinda reboot the pc everytime. i have Win 7 ultimate. and everthings is standard... help if you can please
