Due to the nature of freelancer and the game being designed for only fighters, ships that use the mooring platforms appear on a planet's surface after mooring. Not really a problem for gameplay, but it is a niggling flaw.
So...why not have Landing Craft fly from the mooring platform to the surface?
Basicly, I'm suggesting we replace the (often gigantic) views of the ships coming into land with the view of a generic landing craft (anyone want to design a model for it?).
My idea (if possible) would be to have this happen when the mooring platform was used, but when the docking platform was used, ships would enter the atmosphere with the normal cutscene etc.

Of course, I have no idea if this is possible.
Any thoughts?

I honestly believe this isn't possible, since docking with the rings or the fixture is basically the same I think. Also, I think it will be hard coded that your current ship appears while landing, so, the good ol' source code needed problem may apply here.

Although I believe Mooring Platforms can be customized so docking at a Moor and docking at a Ring lead you to different places but sell the same stuff...

Its a really good idea.

But it's not really proving any RP to anyone since your the only person that can see it.

Only way to solve this..

Change landing scenes so a ship that flies down is off the screen and a landing craft is added into the original location to replace it. Thing is, it'd be constant for ALL ships. Fighters would also see a landing craft. And it'd happen whether you dock a mooring fixture or docking ring. Plus, we'd have to do it for every planet and station, which is a lot of work..

Here's a better solution:

Remove the mooring fixtures so we would actually need another player on a smaller ship to do the transfers. Yet for the sake of sanity we should have the big ships only dock on shipyards.

Been here since Discovery 4.77 (lurk mode engaged)

I'd say Shipyards and a few stations. Some of the stations (such as Waterloo, Bonn, Newark, etc) have built-in mooring fixtures. Planets would ship goods from the surface to these orbital market centers and ship depots, where the larger ships would transfer them to their destination. Would give market stations a real purpose this way.. Of course, even if we were to act on this idea, it wouldn't be for 4.85..

an interesting plan... so these smaller vessels would be given a fee per shipment? And of course known trustworthy firms get more business than independants

Even though I'm a big ship flyer... I do really like this idea

HOWEVER, its easy credits for those smaller ships, and also in vanilla FL large ships moored on the planets, a bit unfair if we can't. Also it'd take forever to unload or load!
