fighters and capital ships share quite little. - i m surprised that many ppl appear to think they derive from one another.
take the kusari fighters - they are meant to look like serpents / dragons emerging from the water. - to achieve that effect, they use a light structure of a curved main body and fins to simulate water or wings - whatever.
now look at their capital ships. - there is no hint of any animal left. - they are classic temples strapped onto some boat like shape. - there is the gunboat - which looks like a retro japaneese speedboat, the destroyer, which has a blade - but other than that looks quite straight forward tubelike ( or rather like some boxes ) - and there is the battleship with its abstract shiplike body.
but thats not all - all factions that do have capital ships ( vanilla ) follow certain characteristics. - rheinland ships for example look like they are very massive. - not only the green colour and the skin that suggests to be made out of layers of rough amour plates, but also the general shape suggests that function is more important than form. - furthermore - aesthetics are irrelevant. - so they do not waste material for additional chassis to let their ships look better ( in terms of sleeker ) - but they just show what has to be shown anyway. - the design follows military design not of ww2 - but rather ww1.
liberty capital ships differe from their fighters, too. the fighters are stylized eagles / birds of prey. - the patriot is supposed to be an eagle with folded wing, the avenger some sort of abstract bird, too. - their capital ships however are functional military instruments without ANY association of a bird. - the cruiser is one big gun, no compromise there about shapes. - the battleship is a naval vessel that looks like a late 20th century frigate or something. - in contrast to rheinland - liberty makes use of a chassis.
bretonia is a bit more odd there. - their fighters don t really follow any design in terms of being derived from nature. - sometimes they might be associated with fish - but they are very abstract.
the battleship follows no style of the fighters - its back is a bit similar to a middleage ship - with the rear hanging well over the "engine" ( there are windows there, too ) - but again - they don t really look like they have much in common with the fighters ....
I guess I am mostly influenced by whatever picture reference I take for my ships. When said picture is one of my own drawing, it tends to become anime-styled. If you look at the upholder, you<d notice I took a f-117 as reference. for the paladin, it was obviously a cavalier and a TIE intercetor, etc.
I don't have the software to make a ship model, and I doubt I would make a good one.
However, I made an awesome Interceptor-class ship out of Lego yesterday. Or maybe a bomber.
Disassembled a few Star Wars ships.:D
Send me a PM, and I'll get pics of it posted.
