Okay, so I only just started self-teaching myself 3D... yesterday. I had planned on teaching myself to make 3D models after deciding to pursue 2D at school, by making models for Freelancer. Then I got a request to make a ship a friend of mine had the idea for, so I drew up some concepts at school, then downloaded Gmax and started building. My only previous experience with 3D programs was animating a bouncing sphere, so this was a pretty big leap.
It took me about 3 hours to make, not including the first failed attempt.

My inspiration for the model came from the Wolfhound/Werewolf and the existing Liberty Rogue Gunboat, as well as a Sloop

The idea of the ship is that it is a light Gunship designed for Guerilla-type attacks and broad siding Capital ships. It has 10 or 12 guns (5 or 6 on each side) that only fire in a sideways arc (Port or Starboard) which will force the ship to broadside other capital ships.
This was the concept art for it raping two poorly drawn Liberty Cruisers (which I had no reference for, so they're just boxes with rings, that are on fire, in space.)

(Ignore the scribbles in the corner, I was using the page to sharpen my pencil lead.)

So, since I'm a complete newbie at this, and I can't figure out for the life of me how to texture this thing, if there were any other ship developers that could possibly explain it, or if anyone could point me towards a tutorial. Or if anyone wants to opt to make the textures, that would be great, I'm not so good at computer-art.
Also, about how many polys should my Gunship have, and what scale should it be? I have no idea how big it is compared with other ships right now.

I don't think it will fit in Disco, and it's lacking in detail, but that's pretty cool for your first try! I thought it looked like a Rogue GB and Kusari GB when I first saw it.

If I tried, it would probably end up looking like a 5 year old drawing in 3D.

He said he wants help.

If you can help him, he can make better ships in the future. Better ships mean better mods.

I would like to know how to texture models as well!:D

For a first try, very nice. However, theres many problem with your model (among other, a very blatant symetry problem). I'd say, rework on it a bit.
