Matthew Grim followed the signal & entered, eventually finding Dimi playing on the bank of the subteranian lake off in the distance, with Colin closeby & on his knees staring at something on the ground.
"Have you ever seen this sort of thing before?" he asked without looking up as Matthew began to glance over the knelt man's shoulders.
"Is it indiginous?" Matt asked as curiosity & an inability to avert his gaze from it began to take hold of him.
"What...whatis it?
"I don't know." Col replied still not looking away. "I think it's...a ah......Well...I think it's a tomato.
"...It Is!!" Damien yelled out, still playing on his own at the waters edge & half-listening.
"Go ahead & taste it, it's ok!" he volunteered to one of the men.
"Was this here when you discovered the cavern Dimi?" asked Matt.
"No Uncle Matt, the tomato was here when I grew it...the order of arrival here is the water, then me, then the moss, and then the tomato." He said while walking over to join the two guys.
Matt fell to his knees beside the tiny red tomato still completely mesmerized by it.
"Wait, wut!?" he asked, turning his head to face the boy after the words finally sunk in.
"...Ok, it's like this:" Dimi continued with an exasperated sigh, "After a few days of hiding in the other room, I got bored & went exploring till I found this place. So I stole a few lights & a box of filters & spent alota time in here using the filters to change the color of the walls...you know, just for fun...anyway, I dumped out the box one day & found one labeled 'sunlight' & clicked it in the slot. It was reeaally cool too, 'cause it really did look like sunlight!"
"Go on." Colin & Matthew said in unison.
"Well, I must've forgot to wipe my feet, & tracked in some spores or something, cause one day I'm sitting by the water having a sandwich, & all the sudden, I saw moss growing on a rock next to the orangey light."
Damien continues without further prodding. "...I was really, really bored all the time, so one time I thought 'man!' how cool would it be to grow my own snacks?.....I just figured that if the moss can do it, then why can't I?...So, I collected some trash, created a little compost heap, & tried to make some soil."
"Go ahead Col, take a bite of it...it's really ok!" the boy said with a prodding smile.
Colin plucked the tiny tomato from the dry & dying vine & popped it whole. the moment he bit into it, he immedieately turned his head I spat it out.
"Tastes like ass doesn't it?" Dimi asked, nodding his head & wearing a misfits smile.
Matthew would have laughed at the child's prank on Colin, but he was too fixated on a new possability. As he reached down to examine a handful of dirt, Damien turned his attention to the guy & continued:
"I don't know what I did wrong, I did everything I remember learning from class about it, but I guess where I screwed up was by adding too much-"
"-Nitrogen" Matt confidently interupted after finishing his examination.
"Yeah, too much nitrogen." Dimi confirmed.
Banger Grim rose to his feet with a smile & walked over to the cooler he brought with him & dropped at the cavern entrance.
"Ya know what dudes?" he said to them from a distance as he reached in for two beers & a tamarind soda.
"We have an atmosphere, a large water source, the know-how, the tech, the supplies and the drive to do something crazy here.
Passing the soda to Dimi & a beer to Colin, Matthew takes a seat by them on the ground & continues. "With a little math, a little science a little luck, a wad of cash, a bunch of sweat & a crapload of Darwinisim, we can create (hopefully by the time you grow up, Dimi) a fully functioning, sequestered, indigenous subterranean biosphere & autonomous municipality, operating deep within the bowels of a Gaian space station."
Col's eyes glaze over with a smile as he pictures it. "Yeah! but I still want my beergarden."
"Ok, a fully functioning, sequestered, indigenous subterranean biosphere & autonomous municipality, operating deep within the bowels of a Gaian space station...and grill." replied Matt sacastically.
