Can they please be optimized, or could something be done with them to decrease the graphics requirement? They slow down my FPS rate, and I don't think I am the only one. Have there been more threads about this?

1) When close to a nomad ship. For example, while flying it.
2) All that have tentacles.
3) Not severe enough to hinder cap PvP, but enough to hinder snub PvP. I don't have a FPS meter, but the drop is enough to be noticed by the naked eye and delay mouse action. It drops for as long as I'm flying the ship, or I'm near it. It gets worse when other effects appear, especially if they are Nomad, enough to cripple me noticeably in PvP. I get 17 FPS in World of Warships, and dueling a guy who had those pink codeguns while on my Rabisu looked like 17 FPS.

I have two 2.6 GHz CPUs, 3.2 GB RAM and an integrated Intel HD GPU. I don't have a problem with anything Freelancer related, and my computer can display 20 or 30 or so ships having a battle without any FPS lags -- as long as they are human. The only things I have problems with are Nomad effects, the effects that appear when my ship is smoking, and apparently some specific gun effects, like the codeguns mentioned above and SNAC explosions, but I haven't yet encountered any other gun effects that slow down my FPS. Mortar explosions don't, and I haven't noticed a drop from capital ship explosions.

I have not one single issue, and no offense Thunderer you are using a potato for a PC.... Its not fair we should low our graphic quality to hinder people who do not have a decent computer.

Nuff said. That is your problem there; upgrade your hardware.

It is a problem when people can't enjoy the game because of single phenomena. Many people have been complaining about the Azurite Chamber Intro Screen as it caused lags and it was easily fixed. We want more people, not comfort richie rich.

Getting to the actual topic, I looked into it. All nomad tentacle effects are stored in fx\engines\dsy_no2_extras.ale - Anti-Cheat will not trigger if you alter that file by, for example, simply using another file and rename it.

- Open up your discovery folder.
- Go to \DATA\FX\ENGINES
- Find dsy_no2_extras.ale
- Rename it to dsy_no2_extrasORIGINAL.ale
- Find and copy dsy_gai_trail.ale (or any other file) in the same folder
- Paste a copy of it into the same folder.
- Rename it to dsy_no2_extras.ale

This removes the tentacles of all no2 ships. If you're still experiencing lags, you can do the same about dsy_no2_smallengine01.ale, dsy_no2_smallengine02.ale, dsy_no2_smallengine03.ale and dsy_no2_largeengine01.ale, dsy_no2_largeengine02.ale, dsy_no2_largeengine03.ale, dsy_no2_largeengine04.ale and dsy_no2_largeengine05.ale. Those effect files contain the inner glow of all nomads.

That being said, you might need to do that with each patch. Also, this is only a short-term solution. I guess you have no other choice than actually upgrade your PC or get a better one.

Also, please learn to play with lags, because as long as you have lags, I can beat you in PvP.

That's true, encountering a Nomad ship decreases FPS by about 20. We should be able to remove the tentacles (by brutal force if needed) if we want so. Note that not everyone has a gaming laptop to play Freelancer (!) on it. Keep in mind that Skyrim on high settings works as smooth as Freelancer with Nomad ships around.

I have 4x3,2 4gb ram and some Intel HD which name I always forget. Up to 1gb shared memory, butdedicated GPUs are always better anyways.

Also, thanks Sombra, will try it!

(The following post is opinion, not developer gospel. Take it as it is.)

I understand where you're coming from that Freelancer shouldn't be running at a lower framerate, because after all, this engine is from 2003. The things that we're doing aren't from 2003, however. They're not meant for machines with 2003 horsepower, and, regrettably, the laptop segment until recently has been "shove 2003-grade low power trash in for a quick buck on a $350 walmart special".

If we had a way to make Freelancer's graphics settings menu do a damn thing, I'd love to hook things like the nomad tentacles up to a setting there. We don't, however, and I'm sorry to say this, but your laptop isn't able to run games made in 2018 at 60 FPS anymore. The things we're doing with this game now and going forward aren't going to be 2003 levels of fidelity and quality, as that would be an even greater death sentence than being a Freelancer mod fifteen years after the original game's release already is.

Sincerely, I do apologize, but you kind of have to expect this to happen eventually. Everything else has progressed us, and the tools we have for Freelancer have as well; not utilizing them to their fullest would be a waste of their existence and a detriment to Discovery as a game. If I find any way to make the graphics settings do anything useful I'll try to implement some options in but I don't know if that's something I can make work in any sort of sane fashion, if at all. I can't promise anything.

Retired, permanently.

@"Sombra Hookier" Thanks, that might be useful. I'll try it.
