The Lost Company is a collection of already wealthy jaded thrill seekers, fighting the good fight for a few minutes by day, retiring to sumptuous food and warm accommodations by night, and partying down in the Manhattan nightclubs on weekends. Or so one would think with their rhetoric and how they act.
Lost Company is a mercenary organization with an emphasis on blockade running and high-profile eliminations. With the rise of law enforcement erecting campsites and watching the place like hawks, it is up to Lost Company to clear the area, or at least draw them off, for their smuggling associates to be able to earn their keep. Lost Company was established in 824 AS by a close-knit group in a commercial shipping concern looking to blow off some steam behind a veil of anonymity. After a few hits resulted in outrage, they disappeared, only to return in mid-825, and they brought friends.
Lost Company now is an ongoing attempt to make a "universal criminal mercenary company", and their preferred method of making inroads into the underground to arrange such a dominant position in the market is to escort the smugglers that make crime pay. They also engage in seeking out and punishing informants and officers of the law who should have just looked the other way on behalf of said smugglers... for a fee. Their outreach program is an attempt to both break away from their roots and make some new friends and credits.
The Lost Company has an affinity for fast ships, heavy guns, and beautiful women, and will gleefully try to get their hands on all three. It is an open secret that Halite, the most well-known Lost Company pilot, is having a torrid affair with an officer in the Liberty Navy, for example, or at least he claims to.
With lawful activity a constant factor, Lost Company does not want for targets. Law enforcement, do-gooding Freelancers, bounty hunters, and more rise up to challenge them and who they hope to be their newfound friends.
In the beginning, there was boredom. Boredom and wealth often lead to disastrous events. In this case, the first three Lost Company pilots were friends, and had been for years. Then they started letting others in their social circle in. Before they knew it, they had amassed a small fleet of criminally-inclined warships and their re-purposed Bustard, the Balboa, was having trouble servicing them. Also, the amount of maintenance that goes into an individual starship is somewhere just north of "a bit much for casual flying".
The development of the SHROUD System, a product of someone else's research that they had exclusive access to, allowed them to evade capture indefinitely, much to the consternation of the various enemies they had made. However, knowledge of that system leaked out, and their adversaries knew that they were escaping without fail, resulting in even more outrage. After the Omicron Delta fiasco, word filtered in from the tops of their less secretive groups that they were needed elsewhere for a long period of time.
And so they went dark, gathering in a few people who could keep their mouths shut. Billions of credits worth of equipment disappeared without a trace, and floated somewhere in the [REDACTED] system, waiting to be called upon again.
Then, in mid-825, it was. The banner of the Lost Company was brazenly emblazoned upon Halite's personal craft, escorting a veritable fleet of contraband movers to their destination, blasting anyone in the way. Lost Company had returned.
Their grateful smuggler allies paid them a combined fortune for their services, and instead of blowing it on grog and wenches like some pirates, they invested the money in an Escrow Termination Service, which would have the effect of giving them more things to shoot, as well as help them gain inroads and allies within the established criminal groups.
LC Diplomacy is as follows:
Not Our Tribe - HOSTILE Pirates - NEUTRAL Smugglers - NEUTRAL House Intelligence - You were never here.
NB: Lost Company should, ideally, only really log to escort smugglers and hunt unlawful bounties. That means John Q. Lawful doesn't have to worry about the infamous "cybering above Trenton with a load of Black Market Light Arms" shenanigans anymore.
