Chapter 1: The Plan
The Black Ops briefing room was located within a secure military bunker in the Manhattan southern hemispheric mountains of Eagles Scorn. Very much protected, very much a secret to all but the highest ranks in the military. What is said in the bunker, stays in the bunker, always has always will.
Four people started to walk into the room, as they did so the rooms automatic lights began to whir into action and did their job. The room is now lit, and the room is set for what is going to be another operation that will not be heard in the news. The men sat into their respective seats and got comfortable, as they were doing so, a young officer walks into the room and hands out small refreshments to each member of the room. The officer then hastily retreats out of the room and secures the room.
So, here we are again. Another war, another operation that our President wants us to carry out no questions asked. Bah typical politician.
Now, now Admiral, no need to get angry over a figureheads empty words. Come now Nimitz, let us get to the matter at hand.
Yes, youre correct. There is urgent business to be concluded here. Now then, weve been called here to formulate an operation to sabotage Rheinlands ability to wage a war within our borders. We can afford skirmishes and battles in the Border Worlds, but if a single capital ship crosses into our territory, its going to cause a panic inside our fleet.
That is something we must avoid at all costs. According to my intelligence in the field, Rheinland Navy is planning a skirmish in our territory just for the purpose of spooking us and causing dissent in the ranks.
Is that so Horton? Well, we best get all the ships supplied and sort out the logistics involved, the current system could use a cleanup.
Admiral Nimitz pounds the desk with his fist, Elizabeth! Horton! This is no time to discuss cleanup duties and improvements, thats what the Defence Bureau is for. We are here to organize a way to hit Rheinland where it hurts. Their morale. We hit that, and we hit them mentally and physically. A war is more than just a lot of ships and manpower, its about the will to use the tools at hand.
Aye, sir
Aye, sir
Horton, we need to hit Rheinlands capital ship garrison in Hudson. What ships are currently stationed at the Hamburg gate?
According to the latest intelligence report, the Battleship Horizont, or Horizon in English. Along with two cruisers, The Rommel and The Manstein, with two Gunboats in tow covering the Horizont with a few fighters. The standard fair when it comes to guarding a strategic location.
Typical Rheinland tactics, the big guns up front to keep the crowd away from the front door. Its nothing more than a fat bouncer at a club.
Interesting simile there Halfpenny.
Ill take that as a compliment my dear. Now then, in order to knock that bouncer down. Wed need a co-ordinated strike battle group, preferably a Class 2 or a Class 5 strike group. Either way, its not going to be easy Nimitz, sir.
Well, war is never easy, but we need an entirely new strategy. Surely the Rheinlanders have worked out our basic attack strategies by now. The Nomad War would have been testimony to that.
Ive got the perfect tool in mind, sir.
Oh do you now Elizabeth?
Elizabeth turns on the communicator Send him in. Shortly afterward, the door opens, revealing a man in a military science division uniform.
Elizabeth! What is the meaning of this? You know technicians are not allowed in the Ops room!
I have granted him special clearance sir, he is the head of the Sentinel department. Im sure youve read about them?
Yes, those new Artificial Intelligence drones huh? What of-
Drones? Drones?!?! Excuse me Admiral, but the Sentinels are more than just drones, they are a technological marvel in computer programming. To classify them as drones it to degrade them as mere insects. Theyre just as valuable in combat as they are in reconnaissance.
Uh yes. But introduce yourself, please.
Oh quite, quite. I am Professor Adrian Farnsworth. I am the head of the Liberty Autonomous Sentinel Project at Willard research station.
Professor, from my intelligence reports, these police ships are merely tasked to guard our trade lanes and catch smugglers. Giving the police force a chance to rest and train up more. How are they going to be used in a war?
Ill field this one professor. In recent months a prototype series run of the Sentinel 200 series has been in production. These are a gunboat anti-fighter class vessel. Designed primarily to engage hostile fighters and bombers, effectively guarding our fleets and territory from internal partisan activities and military ships.
While this is all well and good, what good are they against a capital fleet? That is what were here for.
I was coming to that Horton. Just because these ships weapons are built to shoot strike craft. But what to AI ships dont need compared to other vessels?A silence dawns in the briefing room.
People! Sirs, the Sentinel ships do not require the human pilot! Program them or tell them what their mission is, and they shall carry it out to the letter. Yes, quite quite.
So what are you driving at here?
Well sir, we have a sizable surplus of gunboat class vessels, Ive procured a small amount into the Sentinel 200 refit scheme, giving them the ability to utilize the Sentinel systems.
You plan to ram the Rheinlanders eh Lizzie?
How did... Heh, you were always able to read a situation Halfpenny.
Its my job after all. Tactically, its a risky plan. We cant be sure the AI components and adaptive abilities to be that of a match that of a ship captain---
I assure you sirs, my Sentinels will match and outperform your personnel!
Dont get ahead of yourself now Professor, we now have a basic plan. Assessment Halfpenny?
Well, as I was saying if it succeeds, we will lose fighting power and the tonnage of the gunboats may just be enough to cripple a battleship. The main problem is the shields. Get past those, and we can neutralize the fleet. I doubt we can eliminate them though. Strategically, it would be a sound plan. We will lose no manpower, or morale. But we will shake up the Rheinlanders no matter what the outcome.
Can the ships be armed to cause such damage Elizabeth?
I believe so, should Halfpenny, Farnsworth and I team up. We could come up with a big bang in a small package.
Excellent. I believe this session is over. You understand the protocols involved here Professor, do not break the rules or your history. I shall talk to you over the sapphire coded comms. Long live Liberty!
Long live Liberty!Everyone said in unison.
The members then began to shuffle one by one out of the door and heading to the hanger at the other end of the complex.

Chapter 2: Manufacturing
Norfolk station is the epicentre of the latest shipbuilding projects within the Liberty Navy. It is the primary shipyard for the construction of Liberty transports; gunboats; and even the feared Liberty Dreadnought. Norfolk Shipyards are the testament to the Libertys abilities to manufacture large vessels ever since the 3rd century Sirius.
Nowadays, with a large scale war looming on the horizon Norfolk Shipyards has seen an influx of cargo ships of all sizes bringing in supplies and components needed to build and re-supply large vessels of war. But there is new activity, new transport ships added to the common influx of Universal shipping, and Ageira weapon shipments. No these were Liberty transports, and they were bearing the Liberty Navy Guard ID, meaning that if you questioned their cargo; or their cargo, you get suspended, or worse accused of espionage.
Amongst the new influx of ships was an armoured transport bearing Liberty Police Incorporated, with an unusual ID. A LASP ID, the next thing that was unusual was the fact that it was escorted under Liberty Navy Guard vessels, real tooth grinders, not ships you want to tangle with in a commercial, or even a military vessel.
The armoured transport vessel docked with Norfolk Shipyard quickly and efficiently, it is the hatch that leads to Hanger 4.
Hanger 4 consists of several computer terminals and several docking clamps for medium to large vessels, but it is primarily geared for the maintenance and refitting of Gunboat class vessels.
A Hanger 4 door opens, two people walk in.
Ah Professor, come to check up on the Anvils getting the refits?
Why yes, indeed I am. I have to oversee the preparations of the new Anvils after all.
This is where theyre being assembled professor? Im sure we can find better facilities to accommodate you
There is no need Elizabeth, we have the resources and logistical support right here, besides its not often Norfolk is subjected to attacks that can hinder its production capability. Also, where else to build special ship, than in a special dry dock?
Elizabeth then walks around the hanger, examining the three Liberty Anvil Class gunboats in drydock. The ships components are strewn in what seems to be a random pile, but to a trained eye, they are perfectly sorted for ease of maintenance and refitting.
This hanger is in such a mess, how can you engineers work in here?
Gee, Ill thank you for having such a motherly attention to the supposed negative things in my hanger. This mess as you call it is actually sorted categorically and in priority. The reason the parts are strewn around is so we can see where the parts are when we need to inspect and make use of them.
Oh? This mess is organized is it? Well, suit yourself Im not the one fitting these parts. Im just going to supervise this operation, Ill make use of your offices and computer terminals in order to speed things up around this dump.
Wait what!? Your going to supervise this operation?! Id rather move into Sugarland than be a subordinate to you, I run things my way, its never let me down and Ive never heard any complaints. Professor, you cant be serious about this!
Im sorry Julian but thats the way its gotta be. This operation is a hush-hush type, so we need to be supervised in order to keep things safe. Not to mention quiet. We cant risk any information of this operation getting out into the military, or even the police networks, we are operating on our own on this one save for supplies and information from the Navy.
Tch, fine I understand. Ill be quiet as long as she doesnt tell me how I do my job.
Good boy, but I will have to breathe down your neck at times, its the way I do my job.
Oh lovely, the spine tingling feeling of the Devil is going to become a commonplace thing here now. Ill write my will while I still can.
What did you say!?
Ya heard me!
Both Julian and Elizabeth are now in a glaring competition, not going to back down for anyone or anything.
Now now, nonsensical glaring never solved anything. We need to get back to work, we dont have much time you know. Elizabeth, could you please run through the new parts that came in todays shipment to Julian please?
Julian and Elizabeth snap out of their competition and shape up into their work postures
Off course Professor.Elizabeth hands Julian a holopadTodays load contains a new set of ballistic missile launcher, plasma containers, turret power couplings, communication systems Mk VI, and three Sentinel 300 series core units. These units are self sufficient for a certain time, but please make it your top priority to install them into the Anvils as soon as possible.
Man, thats a fair amount of parts, and Sentinel core units? Good thing I just installed that Alpha what, a week ago. Ill have those units installed within a day, the ships will take a month to finish altogether though. What with all these heavy modifications. Speaking of which Professor, these ships wont last long against bombers if I install these modifications. Basically youve asked me to weaken there plating integrity for more space and fuel intakes.
Im afraid I cannot elaborate on the details right now Julian, what with the bureaucratic secrecy laws. Just keep doing what your doing and Ill be sending more parts within the next few days. Your priority is to get the Sentinels aware, updated via the terminals and await further part orders to arrive with instructions attached. We must keep communications to non-authorized personnel to a bare minimum.
Yeah, I kinda got that assumption from lets see now replacing my entire crew with KV 4 robots! These things are dock handlers not mechanics.
Those are no ordinary KV 4s, theyre specially programmed for engineering tasks too. I oversaw it myself.
Julian whispers into the Professor Farnsworths ear
No wonder she is all high and mighty, robots dont have the ability to stand up for themselves under her programming.
The Professor chuckles heartily
Pardon me for interrupting, but we do have work to do.
Alright, I hear ya. See ya Professor
Julian gets to work on one of the Anvil Gunboats immediately. The Professor leaves the hanger and Elizabeth makes herself at home in Julians office.
Weve got to hurry these Sentinels the others have already been completed
