It -was not meant to- be a battlecruiser. But it effectively is one, as it can solo the BH BC and light up any other cruisers (and chase them, too). Huge ships with launch bays like that shouldn't have a thruster but high impulse instead, in my personal opinion. But I'm not in charge of the balance design, you know.

Those turrets should fire gunboats. The Order has absolutely awesome gunboat-tanks right now and is underusing them, while at the same time overusing the carrier. That is what players need to balance. Or die.
Gunboats (or 2-3 times as much as much fighters, yes) are what you need to protect the carrier. Carrier supports the gunboats because it prevents cruisers / destroyers from wiping out the gunboats.
Lone carriers will be easily swarmed and killed by Nomad / BHG bombers - 100% warranty. Otherwise you can have your money back.
Even when swarmed, the carrier can last very long due to the armor & shield capacity increase.
Final note: gunboats are best anti-bomber ships. Even skilled bomber pilots are panting and grunting when trying to get rid of gunboat / gunships. Fighters last longer against vastly superior numbers, yes... but they lack the firepower to kill bombers quickly enough to avoid the carrier's destruction. Fighters might be hard to hit sometimes, but bombers are definitely target practice for gunboats (it shouldn't be the other way around, gunboats can dodge SN / Novas a lot when flown properly)
