DISCOVERY FREELANCER UPDATE 5.0 - "FIRE AND FORTUNE"
HIGHLIGHT OF MAJOR STORYLINES
BRETONIA RETREATS FROM DUBLIN
In a display of cunning and calculated precision, the Mollys orchestrated a mutiny on Graves Station, setting the stage for a multi-pronged assault on Bretonia's control over the system. The initial diversion allowed them to target the New London Jumpgate, effectively cutting off Bretonian forces' access. However, their tactics took a dark turn as they unleashed a series of ruthless acts against the station's former administrative staff, serving as a grim demonstration of the Mollys' newfound authority in the system. This harrowing sequence of events culminated in the detonation of Graves Station, marking the end of an era characterized by perceived oppression on the Molly side and the prosperity of Bretonian corporations.
Simultaneously, the Corsairs embarked on their own audacious power play within the system. Dispatching their latest battlecruiser, the Santander, they aimed to secure valuable resources, particularly gold, for their operations. Their primary target was none other than the renowned freeport, the Battleship Hood, which had long been operated by the Independent Miners' Guild (IMG).
Adding to the complexity of the situation, the jump holes to Leeds and Edinburgh gradually destabilized over time, while the New London Jumpgate met its demise. Moreover, the Corsairs' activities led to the destabilization and subsequent collapse of the jump hole to Poole, a consequence of the arrival of a vessel as massive as the Santander.
With both factions having limited resources at their disposal, and only one remaining jump-hole linking Dublin to the outside world, the future for the system seems to be dominated by the Corsair/Molly conflict. Meanwhile, the Junkers on Trafalgar stand ready to meet the needs of either party—for the right price, of course.
THE CORE TAKES PLANET GAMMU
In spite of persistent rumors suggesting that the Core's interest in acquiring technology from the artificial intelligences of Planet Gammu was waning, a significant large-scale assault was launched on the icy planet in 832 AS. The attack involved orbital bombardment and swift occupation of accessible AI structures, while inaccessible areas were meticulously sealed off.
Simultaneously, the Core's supporting forces engaged in combat with AI vessels and automatons, utilizing their overwhelming firepower to bring them to heel. Although the operation initially appeared to be a resounding success, a substantial number of AI ships departing Gammu's orbit managed to simultaneously break through the Core's defensive lines, eventually finding refuge in the Omicron Delta system. Despite incurring heavy losses, many of these units have sought asylum with the Technocracy, which negotiated this arrangement as a precaution against a potential mass extinction event—a fear which was evidently well-founded.
The Gammu AIs now find themselves in a precarious position. A portion of their vessels also escaped to the Primus and Secundus Outposts, where they have bolstered the defenses of both installations and appear to be shifting their production and logistics capabilities towards some unknown end. Intriguingly, despite the hostilities, all AI communications remain notably non-confrontational and even apathetic regarding the recent events. The immediate effects of this development are reflected in the utilization of seized AI equipment by the Core and the cooperative production of AI technology between the Gammu Artificial Intelligence and the Technocracy.
THE KAISER'S ORDER TO TAKE DRESDEN
In early 832 AS, citizens were startled by the announcement of a surprise press conference hosted by the Kaiser himself. During this press conference the Kaiser declared the onset of a campaign to combat terrorist and criminal activity across all systems claimed by Rheinland. Initially, speculations ran rampant regarding the nature and scope of this operation. These conjectures were abruptly halted when breaking news reported the sudden destruction of Bautzen Station, a former Kruger mining station located in the Dresden system long since controlled by the Bundschuh Party. This revelation was quickly followed by a public statement from the Kaiser's spokesperson, indicating that Leipzig would benext.
Nevertheless, this development generated more questions than answers. Why Dresden? Why Bautzen? And why engage in hostilities with two formidable unlawful factions simultaneously, especially when the current government had only recently emerged from the turmoil of a civil war? The answers to these questions remained known only to the Kaiser and his closest associates.
Subsequently, another shocking update sent ripples through Rheinland society. While the Military's Battlegroup Strausberg successfully destroyed Leipzig, the operation came at a grave cost; nearly the entire battlegroup, including the Strausberg itself, was lost in the process.
SLAVE UPRISING SHAKES MALTA AND CARDAMINE TRADE
In recent memory, no event has wielded as profound an impact on the Sirius sector as the slave uprising that unfolded on the Outcast homeworld of Malta. While the rebellion was swiftly quelled, its repercussions rippled across the realm, disrupting the flow of Sirius' most coveted illicit substance: Cardamine.
Thousands, if not tens or even hundreds of thousands, of users found themselves thrust into a precarious situation as the price of their preferred lifestyle drug surged to unprecedented heights, rendering it unaffordable for many. For the most influential and affluent addicts, this was merely a transient inconvenience. However, those less fortunate were thrust into an existential crisis for which they were ill-prepared. Many were forced to seek medical assistance, thereby placing themselves under the scrutiny of the authorities. Others embarked on quests to locate diluted supplies of the drug, or depleted their savings to secure Cryer's aid in the form of Stabiline.
The predicament wasn't unique to Cardamine users; the Outcasts' middlemen felt the squeeze as well. Although Cardamine prices soared due to the acute shortage, the supply available for their personal use dwindled significantly. This predicament, especially among addicted Liberty Rogues, sparked not only clashes with the Lane Hackers but also escalated tensions with the Golden Chrysanthemums in Shikoku.
Some time has passed since the disruption to Cardamine supply, and the situation has gradually stabilized. Nevertheless, restoring trust in this lifestyle drug and its distribution will be an enduring challenge, necessitating determined time and effort to rebuild the decades of confidence lost in the Cardamine networks.
CORSAIRS BEGIN EXPANSION - FREEPORT 9
Freeport 9 has long stood as both a bane and a boon for the Corsairs in Omicron Gamma. It offered them relatively straightforward and steady access to vital commodities, especially the food produced in its biodomes. However, it was also a perpetual threat, for within its confines dwelled their adversaries in the Bounty Hunters Guild.
For many decades, a delicate truce and a semblance of coexistence prevailed between the Zoners at Freeport 9 and the Corsairs on Crete. While sporadic discussions and attempts to bring the station under Corsair protection occurred, they languished indefinitely in limbo. The Zoner outpost had always posed an issue, but one which paled in significance compared to other challenges.
However, everything changed when the Core orchestrated the Outcasts' incursion, with the aim of destroying the Battleship Fes in Omicron Theta. For the Corsairs, the situation in the system escalated into one of major concern, elevating control over Freeport 9 to a high priority—the most direct route to reassert the Imperio's dominance within the system.
Yet, one might wonder if this occupation would disrupt Corsair supplies. Indeed, they were acutely aware of this risk. Consequently, the entire station, along with all Zoners aboard, was brought under Corsair protection, its inhabitants effectively becoming hostages. As long as the Zoners' supply of essential components and provisions flowed unabated, their lives were ensured. It was a calculated risk the Corsairs were more than willing to take as their forces advanced on all fronts—Dublin, Dresden, and now in Theta.
For the Zoners, this development signifies yet another blow to their ideals and way of life. Following the complexities stemming from Liberty's actions in the Pennsylvania system and the tenuous situation involving escaped Outcast slaves on Freeport 10, one can only wonder if other Freeports are fated to follow in the footsteps of Freeport 9.
DEVASTATING STORM ON PLANET KYUSHU
Kyushu, the linchpin of Samura's monopoly in the traditionally-grown food industry, has recently experienced rising ocean temperatures. This phenomenon is attributed to a significant surge in the mantle plume beneath its largest ocean. Adding to this, the eruption of several underwater volcanoes has released substantial quantities of greenhouse gases into the planet's atmosphere.
In part due to this geological activity, the equatorial monsoon season has generated some of the most powerful tropical storms ever seen on the planet since its colonization. These storms wrought havoc on the world's agricultural sector, sweeping through the most fertile tropical lowlands. They caused extensive damage to infrastructure and resulted in a tragic loss of human life, in addition to destroying as much as 20% of the planet's annual crop yield.
Despite these ongoing challenges, Samura has pledged to restore the planet and its communities to full productivity by the middle of next year. To support relief efforts, a temporary satellite has been deployed into Kyushu's lower orbit, and displaced refugees have found shelter in nearby stations within the system.
