There will be a way to remove it yes. A little X button that only appears when the control is unlocked. Currently trying to find a nice solution to bringing it back.

Would it be possible to make it so it appears / disappears by pressing a button or two, instead of an X to click?

would be kinda cool if it was like the swtor ui editor where u can adjust size/style (to swap from a bar ie minimalism, no icon or name/to detailed) /position

Depends on how Aingar chooses to implement my code.

might be a good idea to have a subtle backdrop or sphere behind the ship type, or even a black border around the icon because it's gonna blend in with the background and become invisible
