Paint.NET can be better than GIMP or Photoshop, simply due to the obscene amount of (free) addons available.

True. But I've always found Paint.NET to be a slower program to work in (like as in laggy)... but maybe it was my Comp or the previous versions.

Yes, but it's usually just the sheer memory needed by the addons you get crippling next to any computer. What I tend to do when using it is close all other programs, set it's processes to 'high' priority in the task manager, and not use any other applications until I'm done with Paint.NET.

Photoshop Elements generally is 60$ but is almost as good as PS

Generally speaking, it's not the program that makes it better or worse.
It's your skill, and the time you are willing to put in to learn new things, on your chosen program.

You can still have "the best program" and suck at graphics or imaging.

I personally am a "Guru" on Photoshop (5 years working with it in your job, everyday + 3 years studying with it + 5 years freelancing with it will do that.)

But I've seen some fantastic stuff done on MSPaint (of all things!). GIMP can be "more powerful" than Photoshop, if you are willing to endure the steep learning curve, and are willing to put the time into learning what it can do.

If you quit learning one or the other, you'll never master either. It would be better to match up a pro's and cons list, and choose a program that suits what you want to do.

Photoshop is "easier to use" for new people. It is more intuitive (imo.) But it costs lots. GIMP is free, but it can be daunting. However it has teh potential to be more powerful and useful than Photoshop.

It's also a matter of conscience. I would encourage you to look at buying Photoshop, or downloading the Gimp for Free. There are other options if you so choose.

There are also other considerations. Have you tried some vector programs? Their capability these days is amazing. Inkscape (Free) or Illustrator. I think Pixel work (Paint.Net, Photoshop) is slowly declining, and vectors (Illustrator, Inkscape) is the way of the future.

Ones I recommend you look at:

CorelDraw, Gimp, Inkscape, Photoshop, Paint.Net, PaintShopPro, those other free ones mentioned up there^.

It's arguably as powerful or more powerful than Photoshop. the interface is the only thing that seems intimidating. and that can be overcome easily with a nice tutorial.

GET GIMP.
:D

Haha! The gimp tutorials are horrid. They tell you how to do something you can do in five seconds with a Paint.NET plug in.

I have 4 gigs of Ram... and Paint.NET starts faster than Gimp or any other editing program. I also have next to every plugin out there. lol

Gimp does take eons to load I'll give you that...

@Hyung: The trouble with vector is the inability to use some of the cool things that you can do with Bitmap.. But maybe its just the learning curve that daunts me...
