How to reduce forum spam

I think the most effective way to reduce spam is to be around for a year and you realise that it's all same old same old, so you lose a bit of interest towards the foruming.


I think polls are nice. Some interesting ones even end up on the front page. I create polls when there's a point. I think I might have had a poll being posted in the front page maybe 4-5 times.;)That's more meaningful for me than the post count.

Useless polls (read, the flood polls) are a waste of space and time.


And raise the minimum lenght for a post to be 200 chars or more of your OWN text (not counting the quoted text there).

Is there a way to increase the posting wait time to 1 minute? I don't mean the editing and such, but being able to post maybe once per minute.

I voted that we shouldn't hide them.

I like having them there. I know when people see my post count they know I'm a newbie...

What about hiding it when it's over a certain amount of posts?

Say... 300?

Post counts can be very much misleading in that effect. I would believe the Join date would be more important in determining if you are a newbie or not.

However back to the topic of forum spam, the point is that as long as there is a forum there will always be people wanting to spam the forum. There is really nothing that can be done about it. True you can make sure that there is as little possible point to spamming.

After a while most people tend to lose intrest in posting on the forums unless they have something important to contribute.

Anyway, i tend to find that abstaining from posting is better. Posting when you only have a point to make may make people look at your post in more intrest than if you are spamming "+1" all day.

I agree as someone with a lot of post counts may not have contributed a whole lot through their many posts, and maybe they would have.

Though, both join date and post count are important, I believe one cannot be displayed without the other. If the person had only join date displayed could have been around for a long time, but not posted a whole lot, therefore not making a good participator in the community. Or, if someone had only post count on, whether they posted not a whole lot/some good posts or a whole lot/some bad posts, we won't know how long they've been around the community. So anyhow, both join date and post count are important through my view.
