If you skip straight to the pictures, you're missing the post.
There, are we all here now?
Good.
You see, there's a ship design that's been stuck in my head for a full 4 years. Perhaps longer. Maybe someone from Phoenix can pin the date down; I first mused about it at about the time that Kayron's NLR took down the Liberty government. I can't express the idea of this ship well in 2-D, and so was never able to hire a shipwright to turn my idea into a Freelancer ship (back when I led the Junkers on Phoenix, that is).
After the death of Phoenix, the Longjaw was put on something of a mental back-burner. I've thought about it. I've refined it. I can see it. But I could never make it...
So, I bit the bullet and downloaded Blender.
After teaching myself the basics, I sat down to make my first real model. At the time of this writing, I've just found Edit Mode. Then, I hadn't.
I built a model entirely out of primitive meshes and boolean modifiers. That model took a shape; a shape that I know well. And now, for the first time, others can know it too!
Even still renders don't express the visions that I have of it swooping through space. For that, I'll need to learn how to do animations. Don't expect anything soon.
There will probably be more versions of the model later, using more advanced methods. Don't expect anything soon.
I'll say this once: I absolutely do not want to read "Texture it like [ship] and give it to [faction]." I'm not at that point yet. Discussion of stats is right out.
Oh, and I'm aware that it's not a ship yet. In fact... It's just a bunch of blocks. No more, no less.
Okay, it looks cool, but it's REALLY blocky and I kind of think it's not really styled for FL. It's a nice concept though.
Oh, and sticking hundreds of primitives together? Texturers will gangbeat you. Imagine trying to UV map hundreds of primitives stuck together with inside faces as if it were all one model. Yuck. I just threw up a bit in my mouth.
Learn to love the extrude tool.
Oh, and is that 3ds max you're using? Cause if so, that's some seriously advanced shizzle. Want.
I feel I should do something productive, so I'm gonna ask, what is the intended size of this ship? Because it looks the size of a Cruiser from those pictures.
the general shape reminds me of the mafic is it? the homeworld design SHF thingy (sorry, i havent played fl, am out of touch with ship names), but the mesh itself seems way too busy and cluttered. im sorry that i cant give any better criticism at this point in time...
