Yeah, dump Sketchup if you can. If you want to get into modeling with a better app I'd suggest Maya and 3ds Max, but those are just the ones I'm familiar with. 3ds Max being my primary for everything.
I'd suggest if it helps, sketch it out, then refine it, sketch ontop, etc. Find where your idea takes you, and if you can try doing this with a model as well as a 2d image.
