I have my "old" SC4D discs around, and i installed windows xp 64 bits. It refuses to even execute the installer! Is there any workaround for this? Or any SC4 version which works in 64b OS's?
Well, I had no problems installing the game, it was the problem of tuning it so it stop crashing to desktop. The game is very ill suited to multi-core processors and 64-bit operating systems.
To get it to work on my system, whenever I start the game, I have to go into the Task manager and quickly set the game's process affinity to only once CPU core.
Essentially making the game only use one processor instead of the multiple available. This cures a lot of problems.
To change the affinity, start the game > Start Task Manager > Right-click the SimCity4.exe process > Select Set Affinity... > Un-tick <All Processors> > Tick CPU 0 > Hit ok.
That solved my crashing issues and let me run the game perfectly.
Download Sun VirtualBox and use it to install XP 32-bit. Make sure that you give the emulated computer a decent chunk of memory and at least 64 MB of VRAM (with 3D acceleration). I don't know exactly if it will work perfectly, but there's a chance it will.

The game is many years old, and this was before 64 bit was commercial to my knowledge. It wasn't designed to work on the platform.
But Windows 7 emulation is far better than any prior OS.
For gamers and multi taskers, 64 bit OS is very useful. But only with modern software that are designed for the platform. Commercially, 64-bit is being slowly adopted. Wait a few years before really updating your hardware and software for 64-bit.
Uh! I already have a windows XP 32 bits as emergency OS in a small partition. Is it possible to use a virtual machine to execute it? I have zero experience with VM's.
